“Unexpected $79 Charge After $39 Plan — No Clear Disclosure

I only used the app for about a week. I didn’t find it engaging or particularly useful.

The bigger issue was the billing. I originally paid $39 for a 3-month plan. The order confirmation email I received listed the purchase details but did not clearly mention any future automatic payments, additional charges, or subscription renewal terms.

Three months later, I noticed a pending charge of $79 on my credit card, which I had not expected or authorized. When I went back to their website to understand the pricing or subscription structure, there was no information on pricing or plans to understand this charge.

I contacted customer support to cancel and request a refund for the $79 and was told they understood the charge was unexpected, but that all sales are final and the payment is not refundable.

I'm still hopeful they'll do the right thing and make the refund.

If you are in the United States and experience a similar issue, you can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Look for Report Fraud. They track misleading subscription practices. You can also report the issue to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) or your state Attorney General.

Based on my experience, I would not recommend this app due to its deceptive billing practices and low quality. The fact that it appears to be targeted toward people with ADHD makes the situation even more concerning.

Target vulnerabilities within their customers to drive sales

At the start of my ADHD journey and really struggling, Effecto came up as a targeted ad with a quiz to start the process to see what might help me.

Cue dozens of daily emails, each with free gifts, countdown timers, dropping prices, threats of plans disappearing forever. For someone experiencing difficulty with executive function, feeling overwhelmed and struggling to plan this really triggered every nerve in me making me feel highly stressed, panicked and unsure what to do. Not to worry, have your plan for 14 days for £1... sounded fine so I paid.

14 days later over £70 goes out my account though my bank were quick to block it as potential fraud. I quickly accessed all the emails and not one mention of any subscription or ongoing costs. As a result I reported it to my bank, reported it to PayPal and also raised a complaint with Effecto. A very quick response to say they are happy to close my account but that I am not getting my money back.

I have tried escalating my complaint as the very tactics they use are not simply harsh selling tactics but purposefully designed to target the vulnerabilities of people with ADHD (the very group they claim to be helping) but have yet to receive a response. I am now considering contacting Trading Standards about this practice.

I cannot comment on the usability of the app, procrastination and all that. I can only comment on the horrendous sales tactics using vulnerability to fuel profits (those subscription costs are so high!).

UPDATE: the company has offered a 50% refund while simultaneously accepting a 100% refund via PayPal and closing the case.
However, my research has shown they are contravening the rules set up by the ASA and CMA and are also in contravention with The Equality Act. I will be raising this with Trading Standards, ASA and CMA. I would urge anyone else affected to look in to doing similar.

SCAMMERS I paid for a 7 day trial and they kept charging me

Update: this was Effecto answer so do not believe the answer provide here by them in Trustpilot:
Regarding the charges of €37.98 each after your 7-day trial: when you signed up, the subscription was set to renew automatically unless canceled before the trial ended. Because the subscription was not canceled during the trial period, the system processed the regular payments as described at checkout.

As per our Terms and Conditions, which you agreed to upon purchase, all sales of digital products are final and non-refundable unless there was a technical fault on our end. Missed cancellations do not qualify for a refund, so we are unable to return the payments.

I paid for a 7 day trial. Only 7DAYS. And they charged me without letting me know almost 38 euros and then another 38 euros for a month. Until I realised about it it has been 76 euros for something I did not agree at all. And the app is shit. I already requested my refund and they denied it. PLEASE, we need to sue them for this way of scamming people.

Avoid at all costs because it will cost you!

Effecto medical score is a scam…

Effecto medical score is a scam business that is completely ruthless and devoid of any credibility. I signed up to Carnimeat app and then after using it realised that it was not suitable so I cancelled it not knowing the had a hidden subscription to another of their apps without me knowing about it. Been charged £177 for annual subscription but did not have any documentation regarding subscription. Never log into anything related to effecto or medical score as the apps are a scam to elicit hidden charges. They do not send emails or any notifications related to any of their apps. I have logged a complaint with them and trying to recover my money through PayPal but have sneaky suspicion they will not peruse but I’ll wait and see but will not let this go as they are conning the public.

scam you out of your money, no refunds

They scam you by not providing reminders that a charge is forthcoming. That takes advantage of the people with ADHD who they claim to help. No refund for me. “It’s clearly stated…….bla bla bla.” Nothing is clear to a person with ADHD. Get the Dubbii app ***** cheap and very easy to use. Live sessions 24/7.

How much did you pay the people for the good reviews. This is definetly a scam. I paid for the 1 month and received 2 charges like many others.I received a charge for my 1 month I ordered and a charge I did notmake- a 99.99 charge for a lifetime member. I am pretty sure this is against the law and I will get my money back one way or another. I also never received the product I paid for twice. They will not cancel the charge and keep avoiding the issue that I never received the diet I paid for. If I have to, I will expose these scam artists and get a lawyer to fight this.

I strongly advise others to be very cautious before signing up for Effecto.
I paid £5 for a trial subscription with the intention of cancelling before the trial period ended if I decided it wasn’t for me. However, when I tried to cancel, I found it extremely difficult—there was no clear cancellation option within the app. I also searched through my confirmation emails and could not find any instructions on how to cancel.
As a result, £70+ was taken from my bank account without clear warning, and my subscription was renewed for another month. I contacted customer support immediately, explained that I had not used the service and did not wish to continue, and requested a refund. Unfortunately, they refused.
The lack of transparent cancellation instructions and refusal to refund feels unfair and misleading. Subscriptions should be easy to cancel, especially during a trial period.
I would not recommend this service based on my experience. Please make sure you fully understand how to cancel before signing up.

Effecto has been a great experience

Effecto has been a great experience. My favorite part is the personal coach who has been helping me with my sleep habits. I love having someone who gives me great tips and holds me accountable in a polite way. The support is very valuable.
