Mandatory insurance cost disclosed only when it was too late to make an informed choice
My experience with EconomyBookings was extremely disappointing because of the way a mandatory insurance charge was presented.
During the booking process, EconomyBookings offered me its Full Coverage, which I purchased. The rental voucher prominently shows this coverage and, on the very first page, states:
“Pay at pick-up: USD 0.00.”
The same page lists the rental inclusions, including unlimited mileage, local taxes, airport fees and Full Coverage USD 48.27.
This gives the customer a very clear impression that there are no mandatory additional amounts to be paid when collecting the vehicle.
The voucher then goes even further. On page 2, EconomyBookings states that additional insurance may be offered at the rental counter and that, if Full Coverage has already been purchased, that additional insurance can be declined.
However, only much later, on page 5 of a seven-page voucher, under “YOUR RENTAL EXCLUDES,” the document states that Third Party Liability (TPL) insurance is mandatory at the counter, required by Mexican law, must be purchased at the counter, and is not included in EconomyBookings Full Coverage.
Most importantly, EconomyBookings does not disclose the price of this mandatory insurance in the voucher.
Only when I arrived at the rental company to collect the vehicle was I informed that this mandatory insurance would cost USD 25 per day.
At that point, the customer has no meaningful opportunity to reconsider the booking. EconomyBookings' own cancellation terms state that cancellations made less than 48 hours before collection are non-refundable.
So the practical choice at the rental counter was:
pay an additional mandatory USD 25 per day, or refuse the vehicle and lose the money already paid for the reservation.
My complaint is not that the TPL insurance is completely absent from the voucher. It is mentioned.
The problem is the way this material cost is disclosed.
EconomyBookings prominently states “USD 0.00 to pay at pick-up,” prominently displays the Full Coverage that was purchased, and even tells customers that additional insurance offered at the counter may be declined if they already have Full Coverage.
Only several pages later does it state that another insurance policy is actually mandatory — without disclosing how much that mandatory insurance will cost.
A mandatory charge that materially changes the real price of the rental should be clearly displayed before payment, together with the rental price, so that customers can compare the actual total cost with other rental companies.
Had EconomyBookings clearly disclosed before booking that collecting the vehicle would require an additional USD 25 per day, I could have compared the true total price with other offers and made an informed decision.
Instead, I learned the real mandatory cost only at the rental counter, when cancelling was no longer a realistic option without losing the money already paid.
That is why I consider the pricing and disclosure process seriously lacking in transparency.

Full Coverage is a reimbursement-based product rather than a waiver at the counter, so it doesn’t replace supplier-required insurance in Mexico; that charge sits with the rental desk and can be separate from the booking total.
Your point is really about visibility: if the mandatory cost only became clear at pickup, the real price wasn’t easy to compare before you paid. That isn’t a small detail when it changes the whole rental cost.

In most cases, that wording comes from the rental supplier or the booking conditions, and the daily price is set locally rather than by us. If you already had cover, the message can feel unnecessary; if not, it would usually be an optional add-on, not part of the rental price itself. Hopefully that gives a bit more context, even if the amount still feels steep.

Booked a car rental and paid in full for the whole rental period. Flight arrived late to the airport however I had provided my flight number for tracking. When I arrived, the local rental provider was closed leaving me stranded at the airport. I had to pay extortionate taxi fare to reach my accommodation that night and then return the next morning. Upon returning in the morning I was informed my rental was now deemed a no show and my booking was void. After multiple attempts to try and speak to customer support with economy bookings I was eventually told by a representative that we would either have to pay triple what I had already paid to get the same rental or else I could get a refund after the booking period was complete. I paid for a new rental with a different company for the trip and when trying to claim my refund from economy booking I was denied my claim.
Absolutely horrendous experience and I could not encourage people enough not to use this company to book a rental car.

Being left at the airport after you’d given your flight number, then having to pay for a taxi to your accommodation and back again the next morning, is a rough sequence of events. If the supplier had already closed and the car wasn’t collected at the agreed time, the booking can be marked as a no-show under the terms, which is usually why a refund claim gets turned down once that status is recorded. AVOID - Scam Practices
To change a reservation you need to cancel it and create a new one. But you don't get money back, only "credits". Then they make you pay for your new reservation at pickup, so you can't use your credits.
This way, the next time you need to book a car (if ever), you're forced to use EconomyBookings instead of wherever they offer the cheapest car. And the credits expire after two years.
Scamme company with a nice interface and scammy behavior. Avoid.

Turning a reservation into credits, then ending up with a pay-at-pickup replacement booking, is a frustrating loop — especially when you were trying to shop around for the cheapest car. According to the booking conditions, credits stay tied to your account for future bookings; if the new reservation is paid directly to the supplier at pickup, those credits won’t cover that counter charge. If the credit was issued with a two-year expiry, that’s the window attached to it.
EconomyBookings is a legitimate booking platform that works with rental suppliers worldwide, even if this setup feels restrictive rather than helpful.
