Hungary Toll Fine Scam

Hungary Toll Fine Scam – I Paid, They Still Fined Me €400 for a 2-Hour Delay
Body:
I’m writing this to warn other foreign drivers — especially those with Swiss, German, or Austrian plates — about how Hungary’s toll system is being used to extract money from honest travelers.
I made the mistake of entering the Hungarian motorway (M7) on 16 December 2024 without an e-vignette. Once I realized it, I immediately bought a vignette less than 2 hours later — the same day, before using any more toll roads. In good faith, I assumed I had corrected my mistake.
But 10 months later, I received a penalty of over 400 CHF / €400 through a UK debt collection agency. I was shocked. No early notice. No reduced fine offer. No explanation — just a demand.
When I appealed to the National Toll Payment Services Plc. (NTPS) in Hungary, I was told that because I purchased the vignette 1 hour and 54 minutes after entry, I missed the 60-minute “grace period.”
So let’s be clear:
I paid.
I acted in good faith.
I received no notice until it was too late to appeal.
And I was still charged the maximum fee.
The Hungarian authorities seem to intentionally delay communication, allowing the lower fine period to expire so they can impose the maximum charge. It's a trap — and they target foreign drivers because they know we’ll either pay or struggle to challenge it across borders.
I’m not writing this because I want to avoid responsibility — I’m writing it because this wasn't justice, it was extortion.
If you're driving through Hungary, be warned:
Buy your vignette before entering a toll road.
Do not trust that you’ll get a fair chance to correct mistakes.
And know that this system is not about safety or fairness — it's about money.
Shame on Hungary’s toll authority for building a system that punishes good faith and ignores fairness.

‼️ URGENT WARNING ‼️

‼️ URGENT WARNING ‼️
We paid for the digital vignette, received confirmation, and double-checked that the registration number was 100% correct. Still, we received a penalty fine because “no purchase was recorded.”

This is outrageous and highly suspicious – a textbook example of a scam.

They do not respond to complaints, there is zero customer support, and you’re completely left on your own.

Avoid at all costs – do not trust this service!

Use the official sites instead

They charge 2-3 times the normal price with literally no added service. The whole operation is based on that people may just do a google search and have no clude what should be the regular highway fee in the given countries.

Easy way to travel through many countries

We travel from Netherlands to Bulgaria and back a few times per year and I always buy vignettes for Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary with them while driving. It always works perfect! I have confirmation per email withing minutes. And this goes definitely to the database as we never had a problem during these years. While with electronic vignettes bought at border for Hungary it happened once and we preferred to pay fine then argue. Great service! Thank you.

Driving through Slovenian roads…

Driving through Slovenian roads requires motorway pass. The official Slovenian website clearly states that NO THIRD PARTY ONLINE COMPANIES ARE SELLING VALID "E VIGNETTE". Not mentioning that on the official site it costs £6 less.. bear in mind that you will lose all your paid in fees, not only £6 if you purchase your pass from any foreign websites.

Overpriced and unliable

Their tickets are heavily overpriced comparing to national prices, but I accepted it, because it was easy to use. UNTIL NOW.

I purchased a highway ticket for the Czech Republic, E-Vignettes deducted the money from my bank account, and the day after I drove through the country. In the evening I got an email from E-Vignettes, that my order had been canceled, although the price still was deducted from my bank account, so I was using the highway without a legal ticket. Now I need to contact the Czech authorities to explain them that I was scammed, but probably I will need to pay the fine. :( Very unfair and irritating, I will never use E-vignettes again. :(
