Lanier Hardware DO IT BEST Burgaw NC. Approximately 2 years ago, I had a devastating experience at Lanier Hardware DO IT BEST. The Stihl equipment representative which I believe was the owner lied to me about a Stihl chainsaw. This has caused much stress and anxiety. After hollering at me in the parking lot. He took my chainsaw shoved it in my face and said here go cut your wood. Very non professional and incompetent. Could not defend his lies and told me I was not welcome in his store again which was very embarrassing to me. After being in contact with Stihl Corporate during this time. Stihl awarded me with a new chainsaw today which I appreciated. No apologies from Lanier Hardware or DO IT BEST which I've been in contact also. I can't believe that this DO IT BEST dealer can be a representative for a high end company such as Stihl.Needless to say I can't support any DO IT BEST Hardware store. The professionalism of this person was awful. I hope this terrible experience will help others. I talk to alot of people and tell them about this horror.
ordered a heated hoodie from them for 200 dollars and got sent a vest. when i reached out about the issue the only response they gave was that they have a 99% customer satisfaction rate like i was lying. i then had to call and email about ten more times before someone finally got back to me. they told me to take pictures of the vest and email it so they could compare to my order to see if they sent me the wrong item. i did that and then she said after i proved i wasn’t lying that they sent me a VEST because they didn’t have the HOODIE in stock. what company does that? if i wanted a vest i would have ordered a vest. the lady i dealt with was elena westerman and she was extremely rude. she didn’t try to resolve my issue at all. will never shop with them again and suggest you don’t waste your time either
Dont waste your time with them. Bought some lawn mower parts and when i went to pick up, they sold me parts that are third party and not the right size. Which i had to return and cancel my order. They are carefree, lie and not to be trusted. Wasted gas going back and forth twice
Was told before attempting to do business with Do It Best by one of the board members that often great products attend once and never again. Understand a good reason is that Do It Best falls short from their commitments to both vendors and independent stores. One of the recent stores from another entity that Do It Best called me wanting me to sell product because Do It Best did not support the stores as they had promised, missing the holiday sales they needed to support their own store.
High employee turnover
Loss of talent: Toxic workplaces have significantly higher turnover rates than healthy ones. As employees leave, the company loses valuable knowledge and expertise, and the remaining staff must shoulder a heavier workload, which can lead to further burnout and resignations.
Increased costs: The cycle of high turnover is financially costly. It increases expenses associated with recruiting, onboarding, and training new employees, who may also leave quickly if the toxic culture persists.
The anecdotal evidence from Whittenton Hardware's employee reviews, such as comments about insults and a lack of training, aligns with this research. The lack of knowledge noted in one review ("does not know what a feeler gauge is") could be a direct consequence of a culture that discourages questions and does not provide proper training due to low morale and disengagement.
Indeed reviews
"Employees are toxic" review (September 2, 2024): A former Sales Associate wrote that "Workers insult your intelligence constantly" and that it is an "extremely toxic work environment". They recommended that job seekers look at big-box stores for better pay and benefits.
Lack of knowledge: The same review also mentioned that one worker, employed for two years, "still does not know what a feeler gauge is".
Glassdoor reviews
"Toxic Employees" review (July 8, 2025): An anonymous employee reiterated the issues of a toxic workplace and employees insulting each other.
Favoritism: This review also noted that Whittenton Hardware is a "family operation" where relatives are favored over other employees. The reviewer suggests this may be misleading because the company has changed hands and is no longer owned by the original family.
Low pay and no training: The review also mentioned issues with low pay and a lack of training for new employees.
This company use FedEx, the worst shipping company in the world. I ordered my items last Saturday supposed to have received them Monday, May Fifth. I will not receive my items until tomorrow, if I'm lucky.
A good start would be with your cdl drivers who just park in the middle of the road, blocking others, and having no respect or common courtesy for anyone else. I'm not talking about at a delivery location either. This is a truck stop.
Horrible service, non existence commitment from their shipping department. Stay away. Not a single good review.
I accidently ordered from this website (I thought I clicked Homedepot.com) but I figured I'd give it a shot anyway since the order was placed. After several days, I hadn't received any shipping confirmation or tracking so I jumped on their website and opened a chat. I told them I wanted to cancel the order since there was no shipping confirmation or tracking and she said she couldn't because "tracking had already been assigned". Not even 30 seconds later, she sends me tracking info and suddenly and emailed comes thru the exact same time. I thought that was pretty suspicious and told her to cancel the order anyway. She says she can't and for me to just refuse the package when it arrives and then it will be shipped back to them and a refund would be issued (minus shipping charges). I refused the order around Dec 18th or so and it wasn't received back in the warehouse until Dec 31st. I waited until today, Jan 9th, and finally wrote them that they got my return on the 31st and had yet to issue a refund. All of a sudden, after writing them, I get an "order cancelled and refund issued" email. So it seems to me they weren't planning on refunding me if I never wrote them to ask where the refund was. They had the package for 10 days before I finally had to reach out on my own. I don't recommend this shady business! And their product was more expensive than in store.
These people have no idea what customer service is. They took my money, gave me the wrong items and refused to do an exchange. Now I have to wait 3-10 for my money back so I can finish my project. The only thing they did was laugh at my contractor. This is an employee owned company so no one to complain to. BUYER BEWARE... these guys are rude & awful!!
Specific to Browns Do it Best store in Goodrich,MI
Slowest moving staff that couldn't locate the right nails for a nail gun for almost a half hour. Then kept helping other people who arrived well after me. Finally I asked them to stop interrupting my order completion and was told "these (the others) were business too". Then they overcharged me and didn't write up the receipt correctly. It was like being at a store staffed by dementia patients.
