This company is a scam

This company is a scam. Specially when you book your car via middleman as DoYouItaly. In the filter options you can select providers which accept debit cards. Differental accept a debit card but only when you buy from them providers insurance I quote from the agreement which you get to your email after payment: "Debit cards are accepted if you take the supplier's insurance." In my case it was 3x what I paid to rent a car. I didn't take it because insurance is not a blocked value on your card but actually a cost you need to take in addition to rental. You get this information far too late to avoid selecting their rental offer. Of course whole rental is non refundable even 48h before selected starting date. I won't receive back my money but maybe someone will save their own.

It's a scam

It's a scam. They knew I had excess insurance, so they charged 710 Euros for a tiny scratch on the wheel. Didn't even clean the wheels to take photos. Car has parking sensor and camera, unlikely I had caused this damage anyway. Didn't take photos before rental as I couldn't find any damage in the dark at 11pm, didn't check the wheels. Make sure you take photos and have excess insurance, or avoid them. I read they could take months to return deposit...

Watch out with this rent a car

Watch out with this rent a car, specially in Italy. Last June I rented a car in Milan (pre paid in Portugal) and after arriving they did not accept my credit card because it didn't have the numbers embossed. A ridiculous situation just to force me to subscribe full insurance and to pay 270€ extra. Besides this, and after returning to Lisbon, I received 2 debit notes from the bank (61€ each) related to what they identified as administrative costs to deal with police fines. They charged these costs without any proof of fine existence. Email after email, they do not respond or credit the values. No doubt it is a scheme to charge foreigners that use their services, and with no much support to fight it at a long distance. Extremely bad experience

🚨 Avoid Differential Unión – Abusive and Non-Transparent Charges 🚨

This company operates with misleading and abusive practices. When booking online, the International Driving Permit was listed only as recommended, but at pick-up they suddenly made it mandatory and forced me to pay an outrageous €50 per day surcharge, on top of the original rate of less than €25 per day. That means I was charged more than double the agreed price without any valid explanation.

The staff refused every reasonable solution (presenting my license electronically or even showing an online international permit) and treated me with complete disregard. These so-called “extra costs” had no basis or justification—they are nothing but hidden fees designed to exploit customers.

Differential Unión shows a total lack of transparency and respect for consumers. I strongly urge others to stay away from this company to avoid being subjected to the same abusive treatment.

Book with Differental at your peril

At the rental desk at Catania airport, Differental charged me an extra €385 (more than the cost of my one week rental) because I didn't have an "international drivers license". I have driven in italy tens of times and never needed more than my UK Drivers License. The T&Cs EXPLICITLY stated "UK Drivers license OR international drivers license". I pointed this out and showed them copies of the contract. They were disinterested.
They refused to release the car until I paid for "full insurance"; an extra €385. It was either that or my family of 4 were left stranded for a week with no car. I was forced to pay.

This has all the hallmarks of bait & switch scam.

To their credit, Autounion (not Differental) refunded my money when I raised a formal complaint.

DON’T RECOMMEND

When we arrived they were very friendly. We had booked our car in advance, so everything would be fast upon arrival. We wanted to pay our deposit and our card got declined. We went to an ATM and there our card worked. They did nothing to help us, the only thing we could do is to rent another car for €400 MORE. Afterwards they said our signed documents would be send to our email, but still didn’t received anything, also not after several times contacting them. Also when arriving at our car, they didn’t clean it at all. There were still sunglasses in the car from the previous owners. We don’t recommend using this company, because your vacation will start not so happy.

I wish we had read the reviews before booking our rental car with this company. It is a complete SCAM! It is by far the worst company I have ever had to deal with. There are hidden costs at every turn. We booked a large family SUV and when we arrived we were told that because we hadn’t arrived to collect the car within 1 hour of our arrival time (our flight was slightly delayed) that they didn’t have any cars like this available. All they could give us was a small car at an additional cost of €140!!! She then tried to push their insurance onto us with fear tactics. We crammed our family of 5 and all our luggage into the small car and headed off on a 3 1/2 hour journey. Upon our return, we already knew that we were in for another scam based on our collection experience and we were right! He painstakingly inspected the car with prejudice and tried to tell us that we had returned the car with the smallest scratch you have ever seen in your life on the windshield. Apparently an additional €69 fee!!!! Again, DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.

Differental car rental are scammers

SCAM! Do not use Differental! They did not accept my norwegian drivers license altough it is accepted in EU. I ended up paying more than twice as much as predicted. In addition they have charged my creditcard afterwards for 61 EURO without any explanation.

List of catches to avoid issuing a car

This company hides away their non-acceptance of non-embossed credit cards, which is so out of date and mal-practice. They also ask for an Int Drivers licence - again back in time in spite of having a UK licence and another alternative foreign license.
They have a list of catches to avoid handing over a pre-paid car!

Scam

Scam. They have awful support at desk, the make up reasons to charge 200% MORE THAN THE ACTUAL COST of rental when picking out the car, or else you will loose the reservation and the pre-payment. They also made a card fraud and TOOK MONEY (approx 160 euro) from my bank account two months after rental period, and no information why or response when I tried to have them answer what the hell they were doing. THIS IS NOT A SERIOUS COMPANY

Overcharged twice

Overcharged at the check-in counter. Lady said my US driver's license is not international so I have to pay for an extra insurance to be able to drive it. Sounded like a BS, paid extra $250 to as expected final rental amount of $650.
Overcharged during drop-off: when I made reservation I set approx time like from 10:00 to 10:00, ended up picking it up at 14:30 and dropping it off at 11:30. They charged me late delivery fee, worst experience ever, never rent from them again, avoid at all cost.

DO NOT USE DIFFERENTAL!!!

Avoid using Differental at all costs!! They are a scam outfit! At collection they tried to upsell me additional insurance which I refused as I had taken out my own cover. They persisted to try to negotiate a deal on their own insurance cover despite me making it clear that I already had cover.

After I returned the car they immediately charged my credit card (€671) for supposed damage to the wheels and bodywork. I have since provided them with photographs I had taken at collection to demonstrate that the damaged they had claimed for was already there. They have not responded to any of my calls, messages and emails. Atrocious customer service. Be aware, they will take you money and not reply.
Please avoid…..!

Great company with pleasant employees

From the minute we were greeted by the pickup driver our experience was second to none. They helped us with our luggage from the airport to the rental office with a big smile. The process of renting was extremely easy, great quality vehicles which were modern, clean and well maintained. Even adding extra drivers on was free which was a bonus. Great experience and will be using again in the future for my next rental.
