me and my dad rang up about a learner insurance quote with my dads car for my self, which we got. over the phone we spoke to someone called kim, which she was the most politest person we’ve ever spoke to over the phone, she did everything correct and we couldn’t be more grateful. so thank you for that. i 100% recommend collingwood. excellent service and really good outcomes.

Appears to be a good way of a learner setting up an affordable policy, with a £45 cancellation fee. It’s not it’s a percentage of the rest of the policy plus £45 plus £75. Passing your test is already an expensive process and the cost of cancellation and setting up a new policy quickly whips the joy out of the pass. Hindsight I would not pick collingwood again and would recommend just trying to set up a policy that you can change your license type on.
Show the customer the table of percentage of the policy you expect them to pay. You have the potential to have a massive customer base that will spread the word of you insuring learners at young ages etc but instead are going to end up with a reputation of hidden fees with huge costs. Passing your test should be a joyful experience not one where you’re stressed about money to pay your old policy and start a new one. You’re taking advantage of people who are keen to get on the road. I would have like to set a policy up for my niece but the cancellation fee ruined what could have been a good policy and returned customer was lost as a result. My two sons would have also eventually had a policy with yourselves. The customer receives 10 documents when they sign up it’s unfair to assume all your customers have the mental capacity or ability to read through and understand your policy.

The ability to speak with a human agent was refreshing and one whose first language was english was appreciated. Megan was patient and clear at all times - including the only aspect of the process which left me a little dissapointed.
This was the section where if the policyholder passes their test mid to 3/4 way through the annual policy time period (i.e. 7-12 months) - an additional charge is liable to the policyholder of up to £40.00 - in our case an additional 18% charge on top of the premium. As this is a policy which requires to be cancelled once the learner diver passes their test - there being no choice - it seems quite a kick in the teeth that once you pass to have to pay an additional charge. It is almost as if Collingwood are punishing the learner driver for their success/achievement.
Given insurance companies already charge huge premiums for new young drivers, to get another charge from your learner policy for passing your test seems to be unfair. For many years insurance companies have whittled down the value to be refunded to a policyholder should they cancel during the policy period - it has reached an all time low when the policyholder has to now pay the insurance companies more to leave a contract which no longer covers them!
For Example, say you have a learner policy costing you an annual premium of £213.50. Then for whatever reason you cancel your policy - whilst you don't expect a pro-rata refund, the following charges apply:
- Fixed £75 broker fee
- Sliding scale of devaluing fee from 25% to 100% of the remaining premium.
- Then an additional fixed £40 cancellation administrative fee.
So, this means if you cancel the policy after month 6 - YOU owe Collingwood more money!!! They call it an administration fee - bot when it is potentially 18% of the premium - it loses credibility.
Again, if you are using the policy for the duration of the entire year - then you only pay the initial £213.50 premium. Then when you renew - you start again, and can judge how long it may take for the learner to pass their test. Just make sure you read the small print!!!
