Finally a modem that works!!

Finally a modem that works!!! I spent a few weeks (months?) ordering modems from Amazon that I ended up returning because they didn't work. I was therefore a little scared to order here. But...I told them exactly what I needed, they sent it, it was easy and fast to connect, and FINALLY I got a modem that works. Thank you.

Don't expect any leeway with returns

I can't speak to the quality of this company's products, just to their customer service. I stupidly didn't research which modem to order; I interpreted their webpage to mean that any of their modems would work with Brightspeed. Modem came promptly but wouldn't, in fact, work with Brightspeed. I was travelling so it was perhaps a day past the 60 day return period when they say they received the modem so they absolutely won't offer any kind of refund. This kind of gleeful inflexibility--though legal--is disappointing. I'll never again deal with this company.

Defective Merchandise!!

Can I give them a zero? The modem I bought from buyyourownmodem.com never worked from day 1. I tried to contact them for help, then I wanted a refund. Once they got my money, I never heard from them again. I disputed the transaction on my credit card and lost because my bank didn't see any evidence of me trying to return the item. How could I?! The company wouldn't respond to any of my emails! They actually fabricated an email claiming that they gave me instructions to return the device. Now I have defective merchandise and I have to pay for it as well. Avoid these scammers!!

Stay away from these daylight robbers

Stay away from these daylight robbers. I purchased a device from them and their website stated that it will work with DSL. However, when i got it I realized it does not work since it does not have a modem built in. Dont believe in their "easy" but scamming return policy! The rip off part hidden deep in their policy is there will be a 30% restocking fee and you're responsible for the cost of shipping it back plus the cost of them shipping it to you. You'd immediately loose 50% of $100 spent by returning it and they basically made profit on the return. Also, the device is super old and beat up. Save your money and buy from Ebay alot cheaper.

Beware .. Fraudulent Company

Ordered a CenturyLink Modem and 3 hours later never received confirmation. I emailed to let them know and asked for it to be cancelled since it had not been processed. Then suddenly a confirmation was sent and tracking. I sent another email asking for cancellation and they refused stating the item was shipped although the tracking showed nothing. After several emails I continued to ask for a refund with no response. The modem arrived with a phone cord which isn't even compatible with a DSL jack. After sending 3 emails and pictures the seller responded that is what the description states. I am continuously sending emails asking for a return and refund. It seems as if they are denying the return even though the modem is unusable. A lot of reviews state the same thing. This company is fraud.

BUYER BEWARE

BUYER BEWARE: I SHOULD HAVE HEEDED WARNINGS from other reviewers but I chose to hope this group of scammers were legitimate and for that I paid the price. Got a modem, checked with agents from CenturyLink and found it was compatible but when they tested it it had a broken DSL function i.e. could not connect to internet. Sooo..I began what can only be described as the most unpleasant return process (but forewarned I followed their directives to the letter). After 8 emails trying to get satisfaction I was fit to be tied. They didn't know who I returned it to even though it was in their response to me to send to this individual somewhere in tinbuktu. I sent them tracking info stating this person got the device but they seemed non-plussed. Finally they aquiesced and sent me a replacement modem and guess what? It too was broken per CenturyLink agent. It came from another totally different person in another part of the US. Now should I go through this back and forth with a company to try again or even attempt a refund? I finally just chalked it up to my naivete. I think they gather up broken modems from people all over country and ship them out for a small cost counting on its customers to just cave in and let them get away with it. Karma is a B--ch! They will eventually reap what they sow...I do hope. And of course, they'll just malign me for this review saying it was ALL my fault. They appear to have no shame or integrity!

Modem can't be activated, support is rude

Bought a modem from them and it can not be activated because it is registered on another users account. We've spent several hours trying all the recommendations. Customer support is rude and accusatory and saying the item must be "defective" before a refund is issue.

Trust the Better Business Rating.

BBB Rating & AccreditationTHIS BUSINESS IS NOT BBB ACCREDITED
Years in Business: 10

Rating is a "D"

Customer Reviews are not used in the calculation of BBB Rating

It’s amazing how they try to flip it so its the customers responsibility to make sure items are compatible even though they advertise their product as being compatible. I checked the website and they have removed said item from the compatibility list that I ordered from. I would have gave them favorable review that they work with their customers but they refused to give me full credit for the original purchase etc... They also say how well they are rated on Amazon. They don’t Sell on Amazon anymore, I wonder Why? No return issues on Amazon, Making them responsible for the Product they sell. Let’s think about it. People leave negative reviews because they have been burned. Please don’t support this company. They have done this to way to many people. Don’t be the next!!!!!!

You would think it would be easier to work with the customer than try to defend all the negative reviews they receive.

Remember BBB does not rate them based on reviews. Buyyourownmodem.com is a Bad Company to do business with and have a D rating.

Maybe BuyyourOwnModem.com Will listen to the Customers and put them First like most successful Companies, instead of trying to argue with the customers and make up excuses why they are getting negative feedback. They should care that they have satisfied customers and make sure the customer is getting the correct items.

Again you are entitled to your opinion but not the facts as we certainly do sell on Amazon as again you are making up a narrative which had had you put as much effort into creating a false narrative as you did into researching the correct item you would need then you could have prevented buying the wrong item and paying a restock fee which has brought us here. People should read your BBB review so they can see the kind of people who end up there and the context they leave out of their "stories" as we are very sorry to hear that you ordered the wrong model for your provider as unfortunately such returns can be preventable by checking with your provider before purchase. Given the documented correspondence we have with you it turn out you lack the integrity to mention that the power cord wasn't the issue as it turned out you purchased a T3200M that we list to work with TDS right in the title instead of the Windstream T3200 version that we offer whom you confirmed is your provider so we are not sure why in the world you did that or how you missed it but unfortunately you did and yes it ended up costing you fees in the end. You received a response within 1 business day EVERY TIME so you are lying when you say you "got no response for days" as we have it all documented. Listen, we don't even list your provider as compatible for this particular model for their service for this very reason because the firmware on the units we sell is different then the ones your providers uses as rental units so we tried to help you but not listing your provider but you purchased it anyways. You will also see online on Amazon and Ebay the same story that it won't work with your provider and so with a little due diligence or by simply asking us regarding the model the we would have been happy to assist you. Instead you order a modem we don't list to work with your provider, then leave us a 1 star review when against our recommendation you buy it anyways and sure enough it doesn't work? We are sorry that you don't agree with the restocking fee that was assessed as again we did ship you the exact model you ordered but unfortunately you purchased an item that is not compatible for your service. This despite even being presented with a notice stating that before you can complete checkout please confirm that you have read the items description page word for word as you can't complete checkout from us without acknowledging or accepting such terms so that we can prevent these preventable misunderstanding from happening. In reality we don't have this problem very often thank goodness and in fact have THOUSANDS OF POSITIVE REVIEWS on our website, over 95% positive feedback on Amazon, and are a Top rated seller on Ebay with years of taking care of our customers as you can't just "Fake" reviews on these sites but I understand how you would need to say that in order to make it look like you are not the 4% of people who just flat out didn't read what you were buying and then went on a witch hunt after the fact when you found out this was the case. What's funny is you even tell people to purchase from us "if they have to" but to do it on Ebay or Amazon or another site which again confirms that it wasn't us that was the problem but you just ordered the wrong thing and had to pay to send it back and pay a restocking fee for doing so, PERIOD! I mean we even list a Windstream T3200 and your provider is Windstream but somehow you manage to purchase the T3200M which we list for TDS? How in the world do you do that??? We certainly try and our best to serve our customers the best we can as is proven by our track record on multiple sites but unfortunately we can't prevent customers who don't read before they buy and just make assumptions and unfortunately we are bound to have a few and it makes it tough try and help but the review sites such as this provide a great environment for such to vent and lie in order to stroke ones ego instead of take responsibility.

Dysfunctional device and shady business

I ordered a dsl modem/router and it arrived and then my ISP couldn't get the modem to receive the signals and so they sent a technician out to my apartment. The tech tried to establish the connection and eventually determined that the modem router simply was no good and that it could not receive the signals. He also thought the note that "buyyourownmodem" sent with the modem was pretty funny; The note read, "if you have any issues please contact us fist and don't leave a bad review online." Well, I did contact them first and they approved my return request and emailed me an address to mail it to. They also said in the email that the email was confidential and not to share the content with anyone else; I found that highly suspicious. So, then I shipped my modem/router to that address the very next day and since then I have received no refund or word from them. It has been approx. 2 months since this happened. I do not recommend this company after my experience. I recommend purchasing from a more reputable source that will provide a warranty and easy return policy in case of issues.

Scamming Customers 3 Years Later

I bought a modem for Comcast in 2018 from BYOM and when I complained that it was previously used Comcast told me it was a company-owned modem and would still charge me its monthly rental fee.

When I went to complain to BYOB, I was told that Comcast was lying and asked me to submit proof that it was a Comcast-owned modem. It took several months for Comcast to provide actual proof of their claim.

After submitting the proof to BYOM, they reluctantly sent me a refund.

It is now 3 years later and this company is still scamming customers.

I regret buying from this seller

I had a very poor experience with this website. The website is confusingly set up so it was unclear that I was buying a "refurbished" modem. After later investigation, it seems like the website violates various provisions of the Utah Deceptive Trade Practices Act, like showing a marked down price when the seller never offered the product at a higher price.

Further, the modem I received was not "refurbished," it was just used. The modem I received had deep scratches and paint streaks on it. When I tried to set it up, it turns out it was still registered to the previous owner, requiring a long phone call with my ISP to set up. It also is defective and randomly loses connection for the whole house. As others have noted, the seller is combative when contacted and charges restocking/return fees for defective products.

Finally, I was disturbed to find that my modem was packaged in several layers of new USPS flat rate bubble mailers. These are free, provided you are paying the shipping on each mailer. The seller is instead using this free packaging from the USPS as packing material, which is prohibited by the USPS. So in a way, all US taxpayers are subsidizing this seller's shipping costs, which I find extremely unethical.

Were are sad to see that you are trying to be dishonest and attack us as we can document and disprove each and every one of your claims. The truth here is that we have actually worked with the state policies to make sure that our description adhere to Utah Commerce Codes and even go beyond that as we provide the items condition in ALL CAPS LOCK and then we actually provide a SPECIFIC DEFINTION as to the items condition so there is no gray area and it includes that items may have cosmetic issues but is warrantied to be fully functional. Our goal is not to provide the shiniest blinking box hidden under your desk but to provide the most affordable with the best warranty so you can achieve what most have as the ultimate goal in avoiding paying a lease fee of which the provider would grab whatever they had kicking around in their warehouse for you just the same.

Next, the items we sell are absolutely marked down as many of the items we have are marked down 50-70% of what we sell the item for on Amazon or Ebay so we are actually quite familiar with what it can cost and as such it helps bring to peoples attention that it isn't being sold at the same price as new retail items but much cheaper so it doesn't confuse the customer as to thinking it must be the same.

Next, you claim the item was previously registered (which is a favorite lie for Comcast to use) but nonetheless you got it activated but then claimed one feature wasn't consistent throughout your house as again we have our complete conversations documented and not the half truths posted here in an effort to smear us. So you kept changing your reason for return of which you were told you are welcome to return but that we do test all products upon return and if the item is NOT DEFECTIVE we do charge a restocking fee as opposed to you lying and saying that we somehow charge restocking fees for defective products as such is not what our policy says nor what you were even told as that is an absolute flat out lie and you know it as maybe you should just be honest with your reason for return instead of trying to attack us unless you are worried that they item may in fact not be defective?

Lastly, you made a bunch of false claims about our shipping practices which really is none of your business but to be transparent we are happy to share. We spend HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS EVERY YEAR with the USPS as probably one of the few business left that haven't bailed on them. Also, we use and re-use USPS shipping contents that have been returned or damaged and instead of throwing them away each time we cut off the existing labels that had info on them and re-use the bubble wrap material which helps recycle them for use over and over again and frees up space in our warehouse from storing boxes and boxes of USPS supplies. So if every business was as efficient and recycled the materials as many time as they can as we are with USPS supplies then it would save them quite a bit of money for the USPS which from what I heard isn't paid for by tax payers so narrative is also false from that stand point to begin with.

So at the end of the day just have a little integrity and if you purchased the wrong item for your needs then just own up to it and return it accordingly as opposed to coming up with a bunch of false narratives to attack us in response to having to pay a restock fee if we prove your claimed reason for return to be false based on testing.

While the 1% may get it's exposure here, the facts on our reputation don't lie as we have a less than 1% issue rate with over 99.6% on Amazon AND Ebay as a TOP RATED SELLER and have over 4000 POSITIVE REVIEWS on our website so if providing a 1 year warranty for our customers so they know we will stand behind our products and can have confidence in purchasing from us. The other 1% unfortunately end up here.

They are selling units that…

They are selling units that have active MAC addresses. Retailer cannot sell a MODEM without ensuring it is not associated to a person.

Comcast recommends to buy from eBay or Amazon.

Further, they charge a restocking fee and deduct shipping charges.

It is pretty serious for you to come out and publicly play mob, cop, judge, and jury as there was certainly nothing illegal about what you received but we are very sorry to hear that you had problems with Comcast and they they claimed it was "already registered" as they have actually been previously fined by the FCC for equipment registration violations and as a previous Comcast employee we know that that is not a valid reason for them to refuse to activate it for you. In fact, this issue is very rare luckily, but when it does occur many customers are able to get it quickly resolved by working with a different dept at Comcast or just buy doing a simple self activation correctly. We are sorry you kind of ate up what they fed you as there isn't much we can do about that and unfortunately obviously there is a conflict of interest but we wish you would have followed the instructions we sent you to get it resolved with the right dept as opposed to being combative and wanting to make threats and attach us as this is where these kind of people end up. Regardless you were told to return in accordance with our return policy so you were in no way stuck with the item as we still had your back but again some people have the extra time to just be combative and have no intention in resolving the issue. Also, you tell people they should not buy from us but should buy from Amazon on Ebay which is great as well as we have over 99.6% on Amazon and Ebay as a TOP RATED SELLER and have over 3000 POSITIVE REVIEWS on our website so if providing a 1 year warranty for our customers so they know we will stand behind our products and can have confidence in purchasing from us. We purchased a Modem/router, it was old dirty

We purchased a Modem/router being sold by this company as a new item, it came in an old damaged box clearly had been tossed around for some time, it even had a produce sticker from an apple or something stuck on top of the box. Inside the box was an obviously used with liquid splash marks on it, assuming coffee or soda or something and it was dirty, this clearly is not a new item. The company will not stand behind what they are selling, I have sent them clear photos and they keep coming up with more excuses. Run from this company and buy somewhere else!

SCAMMERS!

SCAMMERS!! Ordered a modem which I was told was compatible with Comcast/Xfinity. Never saw on the website, as they claim, that this was a refurbished modem. I very seldom, if ever, have to return a product so I didn't pay attention to their return policy. BIG MISTAKE. These guys are crooks. Not only did Comcast/Xfinity tell me the modem had been assigned to someone previously, but they had concerns about the modem and how this dealer had it. When I handled the modem it had a piece inside which was loose and would rattle around. The modem itself seemed to be, for lack of a better word, junk. The instructions received telling the purchases how to install the modem were crazy. It was almost telling you to be extremely forceful with Comcast/Xfinity and demand they connect the modem itself. They seemed VERY shady. When I went to return the item I was told there was a 30% restocking fee and they withheld the initial shipping charges. So, I paid $117 for the modem, then paid $22 for shipping only to receive a refund of $81.36. This should tell you they do not have a quality product if they have to charge all of these fees. It stands to reason they have A LOT of returns. RUN!!!! RUN FAST and place your order with a reputable company who cares about their customers.

Actiontec modem router

I ordered an Actiontec modem router just like the one that I have been renting from TDS. Easy to install as all info i needed was on the router. Came in less than a week and shipping was included in the price. Instead of paying $9.99 per month, I bought this for $78. I appreciated that the web site gave me a list of approved modems for TDS!

Great price, poor customer service...

They sent me a modem with an underpowered power adapter that belonged to another device. I don't care about the source of the power adapter as much as I do the loss in amperage to the device. The modem also came with a paper pleading with me to attempt settling disputes with them before writing a negative review, which I did. However, they just replied with a generic reply referring to the fine print, basically stating they can send me whatever they want. I replied, and have not received a response. Well, I tried... Now I'm going to buy my own power adapter. Next time I'll stick to trusty eBay or Amazon.
