Terrible experience with Autovia – avoid at all costs

I wrote a review again in October now again Months after returning the car, I received again a charge of €160 for a so-called “missing item” that was never even in the vehicle. No staff member inspected the car at pick-up or drop-off, and no photos were taken in my presence.

Now, after all this time, they suddenly send invoices and threatening emails, without providing any real evidence. The only “proof” they shared is a questionable photo with inconsistent timestamps, which clearly does not prove anything.

I have already disputed the charge through my bank and reported the case to the European Consumer Centre.

This feels like a systematic attempt to charge customers without proper justification. Based on my experience, I strongly recommend staying away from this company.

Inresponsibility

On the 25th of December I had a puncture with a flat tyre in the city. When I tried to fix it I realized that the tyre repair kit was partially equiped with the foam only, while the tyre air pump was missing. I called road assistance and when it came, the guy just blew the tyre with air and he told me it's safe to travel. It was very difficult to communicate with him because he didn't speak English, only Italian. I also contacted the employee of Autovia Firenze and he told me to do whatever the road assistance tells me. When I started driving, I had a totally flat tyre on the highway so I stopped immediatly. I called again the road assistance in order to take the car. I also contacted Autovia help center via whatsapp and asked for a replacement car and they said me it's difficult to do it due to christmas bank holiday. They told me that the only thing they can do is to take the car and there is nothing more they can do for me. Imagine being in a foreign country helpless in the middle of the way and asking for help from the car company and tells you they can do nothing. I tried to call Autovia call center and no one was answering but only the voice mail. So the road assistance took the car on 25th December although my contract was ending on 27th of December. I have to mention that during the check in the employee was in a rush (on purpose) and he didn't mention the partially missing kit and i wasn't also familiar with the repair kit so i thought it was completed. In total they charged me for calling the road asistance (250 euro) and the repair of the tire (189 euro) and 25 euros for the missing fuel. Hopefully i was insurred by a third company and got refunfed.

DO NOT RENT from this company.

DO NOT RENT from this company.
Beware - the rental contract implicitly says that if you are 1hr late, you are responsible for the ENTIRE cost of the rental but your reservation is cancelled and you do not get a car. Very deceptive business practice.

Also, BEWARE - in most cases they are NOT at the airport even if they claim to be, and there are often no signs indicating where to go and how to get a shuttle bus. You might spend an hour looking for how to get there - then running into the time limit as described above.

I rented a car at Bergamo Airport on16.01.2026

I rented a car at Bergamo Airport on January 16th of this year for a week. I refused insurance. The car was in good technical condition, with many minor body damage. We photographed them all. The car was handed over at night, there was no one to accept it. Two days later I received a letter that the car's windshield was scratched and the repair costs were 1043 euros. I sent a claim and a photo of the already scratched glass when I picked up the car. Instead of receiving an apology for the mistake, I received a response that if any damage is not noted in the contract, then an additional act must be drawn up before starting the car rental. The renter is responsible for all damage that is not listed in the contract! I am ready to contact the police for attempted fraud.

Achtung: Betrug

Warning: you may be cheated when you pick up the car. The door lock is already broken, but this is not checked at the beginning because the car has a remote control. However, when you return the car, you will be accused of breaking the door lock and asked to pay for the damage—an old scam.

So far so good.

The car hire garage is about a 15 min shuttle bus ride from Malpensa terminal 2. We had to queue for about 30 mins at their office to collect the car. We were served by Nicco. He was very friendly and patient with us, especially when we had some trouble with our credit card. We told him we were heading to Lake Garda and he gave us a free upgrade to a slightly larger car. The car was full of fuel and generally in good order, except the rear wiper was missing.
We returned the car today. Again, there was a 30 minute wait to hand in the keys. The handover was quick and straightforward. We jumped straight into a shuttle bus back to the airport.
Hopefully we don't get any surprising emails like other reviewers have had!

Autovia looks to charge you extra

Need to be aware return time for rental is 10am. Return car after 10am & are billed for an extra day. Not told of this when return car. Get email about charge later. But, when initially pick up car their service is beyond slow. Provided Autovia opportunity to correct situation, but they said there was nothing that could be done.

Stay away!

Stay away!! We rented Autovia on Bari Airport, and was met with so many extra charges, including security deposit of 326€ which is non- refundable and plus, the workers were super rude and actually, directly offending us and convincing us that we are guilty for not analysing more, but the truth is we will actually complain to Booking and RyanAir since the biggest concern is that we rented the car through their entrusted channels and suggestions( with good ratings..) and none of the extra charges are stated.
The deposit of 500€, we still don’t know if it will be returned although the guy said we returned the car better than we took it - since we cleaned it, which they didn’t do before us.

AVOID AUTOVIA AT ALL COST

AVOID AUTOVIA AT ALL COST! Worst car rental ever. Very unfriendly staff, old cars & at return the guy didn't even try to disguise he was scamming us by claiming damage to the windscreen; he walked straight to a so called damage, impossible to see, and just happened to handily have a bottle of window wash fluid at hand, which of course didn't help. Now they want € 842,- for a new windscreen, at utter scam. Be warned!

Overall ok

Rented an automatic car from Bergamo airport for £150 for the week! Was a bargain so we were sceptical. Overall experience is good. Easy collection, no Que, the man on receptions attitude did change when we refused the added insurance for an extra €250. Instructions to drop off the car were not clear atall. Resulted in us nearly missing our flight and going in and out of barriers in a car park to get the the right area but anyways it turns out you drop the car off when you collect which wasn’t said to us. We were given a brand new BYD car that was really smart and clean. Few bumps on from previous drivers but we took videos of the car before hand so hopefully won’t have any trouble getting our deposit back

An awful waste of time

Stood in line for almost 2 hours! 40 minutes of which, employees were busy with one customer! Meanwhile a growing line of 30 people was waiting. Their slogan "A life in motion" clearly does not apply to their customers staticly waiting in line! Should rent a car with Sixt next time. They dont have such long lines and their customer turnover is very fast.

If time = money, then what you save in money with Autovia you will most definitely lose in time.

Oh... And at the actual car park... There are like 13 people waiting (so, 13 rental cars) and only one employee! Genius! Obviously cost-cutting, saving money is more important than actually providing a decent service within a reasonable amount of time.
God forbid I ever engage with this company in any way again.
If you want a bad, terrible start to your holiday - choose Autovia 👍

Worst rental experience of my life

Worst rental experience of my life! Rude and unprofessional staff, zero support, and in the end a complete scam attempt. They tried to charge me €1,500 for a two-day rental that cost only €180. The car was already in terrible condition when handed over – I documented everything with photos and videos – yet after returning it, they started inventing fake damage claims.

This is not an isolated case – just read the other reviews! Their entire business model seems to be built on scamming customers with bogus claims and endless invoices. You don’t just rent a car here, you buy yourself weeks of stress, frustration, and fighting to get your money back.

Avoid this company like the plague – they are scammers!

When we returned the car we were met by an agressive young man who ran around the car at pace pointing out such minor isssues as a small scrape on the hub cap. Made no eye contact and asked us to sign for damage we believe that we were not responsible for.
Most issues would be fine with a buff and I am sure that is what occured . Got a bill of €532 a few days later . We could have had a limousine driver for the week for the same money. Left us feeling we were scammed and with a bad taste in our mouth
We will never use them again under any circumstances

Don't use this company under any circumstances. We rented a car for a week in Sicily but did not take out their insurance. From the outset the car had a faulty gear box but we were told it was ok to drive. To be fair the car did improve as the week went on. However on returning the car they claimed we had damaged it as there was a very slight scuff on it. The scuff was so minor that we couldn't have noticed it when we picked it up. As a previous reviewer has said it probably would have polished out with a good buff. We are certain we didn't do it. However on returning home we received a bill for 503 euros, coincidentally almost the same amount as the deposit we left. Fortunately we were insured with a reputable company and not scam merchants like this outfit.

Scam merchants, horrific staff

I cannot possibly say this more. Do not, under any circumstances use this company. The online rental price was just over 300 EUR. Ok cool thats fine. When we arrived at the desk, the attendant said that it is impossible to do the insurance guarantee with my bank cards and the only way to rent the car was to take out full insurance of this company. He was adamant this was this case even when it was clearly a lie. The fun part, the insurance and extras that he insisted were necessary amounted to more than 400 EUR. After confurring with my partner and God, we told the attendant to jog on. We saved the money, took buses, and spent the money on good food and having a good time. Do the same.

Took money without a car

I was late 1 hour and 30 minutes to set time for car pickup, due to crazy traffic in Amalfi.

I paid for full two days for the car in advance so that should not have been the problem, however no one tried to contact me and once I arrived they simply said I lost my rental because of 1 hour policy and it’s not negotiable, also didn’t offer any other cars. Refused to help, showed no compassion or understanding. 100% do not recommend.

Autovia / Lamezia Terme - great service

I booked a car with Autovia in Lamezia Terme through Ryanair and honestly had no issues at all, I’m actually surprised by all the negative reviews on Trustpilot. The price was quite competitive for a mid-August rental in Southern Italy, and I also purchased the extra full coverage insurance directly through Ryanair.

When we arrived at the Autovia branch at Lamezia Airport around 1 p.m., there was no queue, and the car was ready for us in the exact category we had booked: a Fiat Panda, clean and no more than two years old. We were helped by Elia, who was polite and professional. We told him about the full insurance got through Ryanair and he didn't try to sell us anything extra. He only reminded us that in case something would happen, we would need to pay for the damage and then claim a refund from the external insurance company.

We returned the car during opening hours with a full tank, just as we had received it. There was space to park, someone came to check the vehicle, and everything was in order. We signed off, and the €500 deposit was released from my credit card the very next day.

I don’t know if I was just lucky, but my experience was excellent.
