Worst experience ever!

Worst experience ever!
We booked our rental car to pick up from Olbia airport with Auto Europe, the vendor was Gold Car. They did not accept my driver's license even though it was valid. They told me that they need a European/international driving license. However, this information was not shared with us when we did the booking on the website.

If you are coming outside of Europe, do not rent a car from them. The call center did not pick up the phone for 10-15 minutes straight. We called them multiple times until we got hold of them. Even though I could not get the rental car, they did not refund me either. They said they cannot refund me as this was stated somewhere unreadable on the voucher. They did not even try to help out or cancel the booking either; they said you can only do it 48 hours before. I did not know this was going to happen, so what do you expect? Scammers.

We went on and rented out another car easily with no hustle at the airport by another provider. So STAY AWAY!!!

Unresponsive and dismissive of our…

Unresponsive and dismissive of our accident. No refund was issued, and they refused to investigate the faulty claim report by Hertz. Not recommending.

Last month, my friend and I booked a car through Auto Europe Deutschland GmbH. The car was picked up at the Hertz dealership at the Zurich Airport. After one day of usage, the car signaled problems with the engine, due to which, we had to stop the car immediately on the side of the road and had it towed. Despite our requests, Hertz was not able to provide us with a replacement as the accident happened on Saturday, and the following day all of their offices would be closed. We were promised a full refund for the car and the situational public transport fees, but had to file the claim through Auto Europe Deutschland GmbH. We provided screenshots, pictures, and other substantial accident documentation to Auto Europe. However, we were told that Hertz claimed that a car replacement was not requested, thus a refund was not possible. This was certainly not true and could be proved by the documentation we provided to Auto Europe.

It's been now more than a month, and Auto Europe refuses to respond to us and escalate the investigation with Hertz. Clearly, Auto Europe does not value its customers enough to investigate the faulty claims made by Hertz. Our claim was handled by Luisa at Auto Europe.

Dear Mr. Harutyunyan,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention and we sincerely apologize for the frustration and inconvenience you have experienced.

We want to clarify that Auto Europe Deutschland GmbH acts as a broker, connecting customers with car rental suppliers like Hertz. While we facilitate the booking process and assist with claims, the direct investigation and decisions regarding refunds are ultimately handled by the rental supplier.

Following your report, we did conduct an internal investigation and subsequently received a response from Hertz. According to their investigation, their internal colleagues confirmed that an exchange for the vehicle was not requested at the time of the incident as reported, and therefore, a refund has not been authorized by them.

As a broker, the speed of responses and the outcome of investigations are often dependent on the supplier's processes and timelines. We understand this can be frustrating, and we work diligently to follow up with our partners to obtain information and resolutions for our customers.

As communicated to you on the 15th of this month, 'We are currently investigating the matter which you have brought to our attention and shall be in contact with you via email as soon as we have further information.' This remains our commitment, and we are actively working to understand Hertz's findings and explore any possible avenues for resolution based on the documentation you provided.

We understand your disappointment and want to assure you that we take your feedback seriously. The Customer Service Team will continue to pursue this matter with Hertz on your behalf and will update you via email as soon as we have further information.

Sincerely,

The Auto Europe Team

Autoeurope accepted Budget's deceit!

I had a Budget car rented through Autoeurope in Frankfurt am Main in Nov-Dec 2024. Upon returning the car, I was informed that bill had increased by about 200 €! After very long investigations and email sendings, the outcome was that part of the sum was due to missing fuel and additional insurances. Fortunately, I had photos of the fuel meter. When I got the car the fuel tank was half full. So, I returned the car with some gas more in the tank than there was upon getting the car. Initially, the renter informed that my photos are invalid! When protesting, they agreed that had made a "mistake", and I get some money back. But I never got back money from the insurances that I HAD NOT agreed to take. My acceptance for the insurances was a plain deceit. I'm very disappointed with Autoeurope, as it turned out to be at the scammer's side!
Feb 14, 2025 After finally finding Budget's email address, I got their answer I've today responded to. Now, I wait what they tell me. If I'm not satisfied with the answer I turn once more to AutoEurope.
Feb 25, 2025 I didn't get any response from Budget even though I was asked for information which I sent. Now, I contacted again AutoEurope through the link above. I just got confirmation that my message was received. It is a question of the EXTRA insurance which I didn't ask or approve. I can confirm that I signed the contract. However, no word was said to me about getting an extra insurance! It is just a deceit!
March 1, 2025 I got the same answer as previously from AutoEurope: They deny their responsibility to the fraud. Therefore, I repeat here the facts: 1. I was never aware that extra insurances by Budget were added to the rental. 2. I was never shown or told that the rental sum was increased. The total expenses were not shown to me. Therefore, it didn’t occur to me that the rental price was increased by about 200 € (initially also containing the fraud with missing gasoline in the tank). 3. I was never shown the terms of the extra insurances. Therefore, I am badly disappointed to both Budget Germany and AutoEurope EU.
ONE MORE thing, the increase in the rent was added upon the RETURN of the car. An employee just mentioned of it to me when I was in a hurry for the plane. Perhaps I thought it was a mistake. So, I couldn't be aware of it and I didn't accept it at the time the rental began.

Review: Scam - Stay away from this company!

Review:

Auto Europe Germany scammed me out of €84 by adding an insurance policy I never requested. When I picked up the car, they told me the deposit was only for the gasoline. However, they later refunded only part of my deposit, keeping €84 for the unauthorized insurance. I asked for clarification, but they failed to provide any proof or explanation. Their practices are misleading and dishonest. Stay away from this company!

Dear Mrs. Sanchez Garcia,

Thank you very much for your review. We are very sorry to hear that your car rental with Centauro was not to your satisfaction. You had informed us that you were charged an extra insurance.

Please let us first get the facts straight: Auto Europe is a car hire agency. In our booking system, clients can compare, choose and book the car rental offers from various rental car suppliers all over the world. The car rental contract is signed between the supplier and the client on site at the car rental station with the car rental agents; in the event of disputes between the two contractual partners, i.e. you and your car supplier Centauro, our customer service team can mediate.

You complained to our customer service team about an extra, charged on site with Centauro and requested a refund of this charge. When contacting your provider, our customer service team was informed that you had purchased an insurance product of Centauro, which is specified as ‘Smart Cover’ in the rental agreement. By doing so, you accept the provider's General Terms and Conditions, which you confirm by signing the contract. As an agent, it is not possible for us to understand in retrospect what agreement you made with the car hire company on site. After signing a contract, we can no longer contest it. The rental agreement signed on site is legally binding, the additional insurance has been utilized and will not be refunded retroactively.

As with any other contract, a car hire agreement should be read and understood by the customer before signing. As a customer, you naturally have the right to read the contract before you sign when picking up the car at the rental counter, regardless of whether it is presented to you in paper form or digitally on a pad. If there are any questions, these should be discussed immediately, and any misunderstanding should be clarified with the car hire company's staff. If there is still anything unclear, our reservation team can be reached directly by telephone.

We regret that we are unable to help you in this case.

Yours sincerely

Don't hope to get help from this company if something goes wrong with your booking

I had booked a convertible but when I arrived at the airport I was told that there was no convertible available.
When I contacted autoeurope, they told me that they couldn't help and that I could to file a complaint only after the end of the booking.
Back home I filed a complaint and received a compensation of 40 EUR on a 900 EUR booking for a car I did not receive.
During the whole process, autoeurope did not answer my emails.

Dear Alain,

Thank you for your review. We are very sorry that your supplier did not provide you with the convertible you booked and we apologise to you for the poor service.

As far as the contractual situation is concerned, we would like to explain the situation:
We are a car hire agency, which means that you had chosen in the comparison platform of Billiger-Mietwagen.de the car hire offer of your supplier in our booking system, the voucher was sent to you and the rental price was forwarded to the supplier. You entered into the rental contract with the supplier on site; in the event of a dispute between the two contractual partners, i.e. you and the rental company, we can only mediate.

As we can see in the booking system, the case has now been closed and you have also received a refund from your supplier.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to you.

Additional charges when booking

I booked a rental car in Munich from AutoEurope (Thrifty/Hertz) on July 1st, 2024 via billiger-mietwagen.de. The voucher included, among other things, the rental costs, theft protection, an airport fee and the applicable taxes. However, when returning the car only a small part of my deposit with Hertz was paid back and a part of it was retained. After complaining to Hertz, they explained to me that the voucher contains services worth a total of €472.93 and my prepaid voucher is only worth €334.21 and that I therefore have to pay the difference of €138.72.
I do not agree with this explanation. I have already paid for all of the services at AutoEurope with my voucher. When booking with AutoEurope, it was never mentioned that I would have to pay an additional €138.72 to Hertz for the services already included in my reservation.
Since I signed the rental agreement with Auto Europe, I would like them to clarify the matter and refund me the €138.72 I overpaid. I already wrote an email on September 16th and again on September 25th, but I have not received a response yet!!
I trusted the reliability of Hertz/Thrifty and AutoEurope when I made my reservation and I have never had a problem like this before, this situation is really frustrating!!!

Didnt get a car on vacation due to Autoeurope mistake

We didn't get a car in Avis shop in Italy during vacation, mistake was on Autoeurope side, as they didn't communicate new rental contract start date as it had been agreed with their service staff. So we were without car, had a lot of financial and holiday time damage. Even as they did the mistake, they insisted on charging a cancellation fee. But in fact we didn't cancel, we just didn't get a car provided by AVIS, as Autoeurope didn't sent contract change dates to them.

Useful, but be cautious.

Although the website is a bit difficult to use, it does work, and you can easily and quickly rent a car.

However, based on the following, I would probably pay a little extra in the future and deal directly with well-established rental companies.

You should be aware that Autoeurope is a broker and not a car rental company. Be cautious, as you might end up with less reliable companies. I personally ended up in the hands of AutoOne/Surprice in Florence, which caused quite a few challenges (see my review there). I would recommend canceling the reservation if you are referred to an unknown and not well-reputed company.

Their customer service is quite good, and they did what they could to get my deposit back from AutoOne. It succeeded after six weeks (AutoOne are experts at delaying deposit refunds).

Please note that as a Danish customer, you will be calling a German landline, which in many mobile plans incurs a fee. It cost me around 300 DKK.

This was also due to the fact that the opening hours listed on the website were not correct. The staff apparently weren't aware of the changes either, as they also forwarded me to a closed office.

Although the website is in Danish and the voicemail is in Danish, the staff speak English. This posed a bit of a challenge for me since it’s not "everyday English" that's needed to explain relatively complicated issues.

Dear Morten,

Thank you very much for your review. We are very sorry to hear that you had an unpleasant experience with your car hire company Surprice in Florence. Thankfully our customer service team was able to assist you and find a solution.

Yes, you have correctly recognised that Auto Europe is a car hire broker, which means that we do not have our own fleet of rental cars, but rather broker the rental cars of many car hire companies worldwide on our comparison portal. These include international companies such as Avis, Europcar, Hertz or Sixt, but also national or even regional car hire companies such as Surprice.

This means that our customers can choose a car hire offer on our portal from all our car hire partners in every price segment and for every travel budget. Please note also, that our clients rate the car rental companies and the star rating is clearly displayed on our site.

We are very sorry that the communication in English was problematic for you. We answer our Scandinavian clients in English when a Scandinavian agent is not available.

Dear Mr Finnerty,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review. We are very sorry that you are unhappy with our service as an rental car agent. Checking your booking, we can see that you had booked in our booking engine our excess protection product Rundum-Schadenschutz, which we confirmed you on your voucher (pls see on page 2 “In Ihrem Mietpreis enthalten”: Rundum-Schadenschutz).

Every vehicle offered in our booking system is always equipped with the car hire company's basic cover, i.e. the country's statutory insurance cover. This includes third party liability insurance, collision damage waiver (CDW) and theft protection (TP). Collision Damage Waiver and TP may be linked to a certain deductible, a fixed amount that the driver must pay in the event of damage or theft. In your case this excess would have been 2,000 euro. Detailed information about the insurance included and the amount of the excess can be called up at any time during the booking process via the small blue info icon.

On the options page during the booking process, the individual cover options (e.g. “Full Damage Protection/Rundum-Schadenschutz”, “Full Damage Protection with Breakdown Cover/ Rundum-Schadenschutz mit Breakdown Cover”) are listed in tabular form in comparison to the “Standard Package” for a better overview. If an additional product is selected - in your case you had chosen Auto Europe’s ”Full Damage Protection/Rundum-Schadenschutz” - the information about this is displayed on all subsequent booking pages in the summary of the booking details on the right-hand side under "Booking information". The wording when booking i.e. “Full Damage Protection with Breakdown Cover” then is "Rental includes Full Damage Protection with Breakdown Cover".

In the "Terms, Conditions, Local Fees & General Business Terms/Mietkonditionen, Gebühren vor Ort & AGB" on the checkout page, all details about the booked product (inclusions, exclusions, procedure in the event of damage and when making a claim for reimbursement with Auto Europe, etc.) are listed under the " Full Damage Protection/Rundum-Schadenschutz " tab. The full details of the booked product (Inclusions, Exclusions, Accident procedure, Excess claim procedure etc. are also listed on your voucher on page 5 and 6.

Some car hire company employees offer more or less intensive additional in-house protection options when picking up the car on site. These are optional and it is at the judgement and decision of each customer to accept or decline these offers. We therefore advise all customers to familiarize themselves with the booked products and their conditions before collection. If you have any questions or uncertainties, it is advisable to contact our reservations team immediately, i.e. before signing the hire contract, who will be happy to advise you. We cannot dispute coverage issues after the contract is signed.

If you have any further questions about car rental coverage, please do not hesitate to contact our reservations team on 089 - 412 07 269 or by e-mail at reservierung@autoeurope.de.

Autoeurope are the worst…

Edited to answer Autoeurope: The car hire company were willing to hold the car until the following day but needed an Autoeurope agent to contact them to confirm the same. Autoeurope refused to do this.

Autoeurope are one of the worst companies I have dealt with. We missed our connecting flight and contacted Autoeurope to let them know we would be collecting the car from the car company the next day. They refused to allow this to happen, made us make a new booking charged us 70 euro fine and our new car was nothing alike with a worse company well away from the airport. We will never use them again.

Dear Doireann,

Thank you for your feedback. We understand your frustration and are very sorry for the trouble due to your flight delay.

It’s common practice for car rental companies worldwide to reserve the right, in the event of a pick-up delay, to re-rent the vehicle without the prospect of a refund to the original renter. This policy is set by the individual car rental companies and, regretfully, as a broker, Auto Europe has no control over this.

When you informed us about the delay on the day of the expected pick-up, our reservation agents managed to cancel your booking as the booked supplier would not have waited for you and no refund as per terms and conditions would have been possible. The rental price minus an administration fee of 70 Euro is transferred back to your account. Please note that as per the terms and conditions cancellations are only free of charge up to 48 hours before pick-up.

In cause of a flight delay inside the EU, caused by the airline company, flight passengers need to contact the airline company to request compensation.

We regret that you are not happy with the last-minute rental offer our agents found for you with pick-up on the next day. Unfortunately, there is not a huge selection of last-minute offers in the summer season.

Yours sincerely

AutoEurope happily collaborates with fraudulent suppliers

I booked a car for five days to be picked up by the airport in Florence. It turned out that AutoEurope's supplier in this case was a company called "Surprice" (yes, I know, sounds foreboding... take a look at this company at Trustpilot, if you're curious about them - it's an experience). There was a 900 euros deposit reservation stipulated on the contract, which of course was no problem - that was part of the agreement that we ordered.
However, it turned out that Surprice did not block/reserve this amount on my card as they should, but actually withdrew it. It has now been a month since we delivered the car back, completely spotless as confirmed by a member of staff there (who then declared the contract closed), but Surprice never returned the 900 euros. I have contacted AutoEurope customer service several times by phone, have on all occasions spoken to a polite person with no authority to do anything, and have seen absolutely ZERO effective action from AutoEurope's side. When contacted by e-mail, AutoEurope returns standard messages with a lot of generic talk about how much they care about their customers. The only concrete thing they write is to talk about my "dispute" with their supplier, and that they will send "weekly" e-mails to the supplier. Yes, you read that right :-) - in a situation where one of their suppliers unlawfully charges large amounts to the credit cards of customers who booked via AutoEurope, their only initiative is to write "weekly" e-mails to a supplier that simply ignores them. I have this in writing. It seems that to AutoEurope management, 900 euros is a detail, but for me it is a lot of money. And now AutoEurope themselves simply stopped replying to my e-mails, despite all written in a formal, proper tone.
I booked my rental car via the AutoEurope website, and they gave my credit card information to the supplier. And still AE acts as if the whole thing has nothing to do with them (in rampant violation of GDPR regulation). Apparently, AutoEurope's only interest is in extracting money from you while not taking any responsibility for anything. What a business model... If you want to preserve your good mood and happiness, avoid dealing with AutoEurope. Next step from here is to go to the police - where I live, taking people's money unlawfully is called theft.

Dear Niels,

Thank you for your review. We regret that you have not received your security deposit back from your car rental supplier Surprice. This is very unfortunate, and we are very sorry. Unfortunately, with only a first name, we cannot find your booking in our system in order to investigate on the status of your case.

Please let us first get the facts straight: Auto Europe is a car hire agency, which means that you have chosen Surprice's car hire offer in Florence in our booking system, we have sent you the voucher and forwarded the rental price to Surprice. You entered into the rental contract with Surprice on site; in the event of disputes between the two contractual partners our customer service can support the client if necessary.

As our colleague of the Customer Service team obviously have already informed you, we do our best to process your case as quickly as possible and kindly asked you for your patience. We are sorry that you are not happy with the wording of our e-mails, but indeed this is the case: Our Customer Service team can only work on cases when the car suppliers answer open questions. Therefore, we remind them regularly by e-mail on pending topics, in your case obviously why Surprice transferred the deposit from your credit card rather than blocking it and why the money has not been transferred back yet.

In accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Auto Europe of course does NOT send credit card details of our clients to the car rental companies. The car rental companies receive the first name and surname of the client and the booking data of the car to reserve the vehicle. Your name and payment details will only be forwarded to the respective payment service provider for the payment of the rental tariff in our system. This means that your chosen supplier Surprice got in contact with your credit card details for the first time when you handed over your credit card to secure the deposit on site at pick-up.

Paying for your car hire booking via our booking system on the one hand and blocking the deposit to the local car hire company on the other are two completely different transactions. As an agent, we do not have access to the booking systems of the car rental companies. Therefore, our customer service needs to contact the suppliers to help our clients. Our sincere apologies for the inconvenience this delay causes.

Auto Europe is NOT holding on to your money and is making every effort it can to find out exactly what happened with the car rental company.

Again, we kindly ask you for your patience. If you wish to contact your supplier directly, the customer service of Surprice can be reached over the link https://surpricemobility.com/contact-us/.

Yours sincerely

I am Canadian

I am Canadian. I rented a car from AutoEurope and was directed to their european site. I booked the car out of Los Angeles for a vacation with Dollar Car Rental. When I arrived they would not honour the contract. I had to purchase a contract directly. I have tried to contact AutoEurope's phone number but to no avail. I have filled out an online claim form but have not heard back. I have checked my status only to be told to phone the number that I can not get through to. I have contacted there 1-888 number for their North American operations, been given a ticket number, and still no feedback. They stole my money and did not provide any service. I will avoid this company at all costs and suggest all others avoid them too.

Dear Mr. Hoover,

Thank you for your feedback. We’re very sorry to hear of your negative experience when trying to pick up your car with Thrifty in Los Angeles. We believe the problem is that you had booked on our European site rather than on our Canadian site. Many of the car rental companies send Auto Europe different terms and conditions for various source countries.

Also, we apologise for you not being able to contact us by telephone. The satisfaction of our clients is paramount, and we will use your feedback to try and prevent similar situations in the future. As we can see in our system, you filled in a European Customer Service claim on May13th. Please be assured that our team will take care of your case as soon as possible.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.

Yours sincerely,

Cannot be trusted

Update: After Trustpilot evaluation, Auto Europe reacted quickly and has refunded the difference.
It is strange that it is necessary with Trustpilot to get a response. Should have been done immediately

Rented a car in Dubai through Auto Europe Deutschland, but got a smaller car than booked, when we arrived. Which was a problem, because we were more people than could fit in the car the coming days.
I complained to Auto Europe Deutschland, who quickly made a case.... So price could be adjusted
But that is it, no response, nothing from Auro Europe since February.
They promise a lot, but nothing happens

Dear Peter,

Thank you very much for your review. We are very sorry that you had a bad experience with your car rental company in Dubai. We deeply regret this and apologize for the poor service provided by our car rental partner.

Regarding the long processing time: Auto Europe's customer service team can only process our customers' inquiries and complaints as quickly as our car rental partners respond to our questions and requests for clarification. As we can see in the system, your rental company was asked to clarify the case again at the beginning of last week. As soon as the team has finalized the case, they will get back to you immediately. We are very sorry for the long processing time, apologize to you and ask for your patience.

Yours sincerely

Prices good - service does not exist

I recently decided to book a rental car through AutoEurope.de, attracted by their competitive pricing. Initially, the booking process seemed user-friendly and the rates were indeed appealing.

However, my positive experience quickly deteriorated due to a significant issue with their payment processing. My credit card was erroneously charged twice because of some technical problems on their website. This double charge was not only unexpected but also inconvenient, as it led to undue financial strain.

In an attempt to resolve this issue, I reached out to their customer service via email, twice. Unfortunately, my efforts to communicate were met with silence—no replies came my way, which was quite disappointing. Seeking further assistance, I resorted to using their online contact form, hoping this might prompt a response.

As of this moment, I have yet to receive any acknowledgment or resolution from AutoEurope.de's customer service team. This lack of communication is frustrating and forces me to consider more drastic measures, including potential legal action, to rectify this financial discrepancy.

While AutoEurope.de offers attractive rates and a straightforward booking process, their management of payment errors and the apparent disregard in customer service response greatly undermine the overall user experience. Prospective customers should be wary of these issues and possibly prepare for challenges in dealing with customer service.

Dear Mr Kwetina,

Thank you for your feedback. We apologise for the delayed response from our customer service team. As we can see in our booking system, you have made two bookings within 16 minutes with identical rental dates (EU21000917 and EU21000985). Therefore, there are also two charges.

Our reservations team is already looking into the matter, will clarify this with the car hire company and inform you immediately.

The team will be happy to answer any further questions you may have on 089 - 412 07 295.

Yours sincerely
