charged 200 euros even with online evidence
I purchased an online vignette for 10 days, and even though I had the invoice, bank details for the purchase, and evidence on the website showing my license plate, I was still charged 200 euros.
They said I did not have it. Even with my evidence that I purchased it. They are just a bunch of thieves.
Scumbags Praying on Tourists
There is no option to give these people zero stars otherwise I would. We travelled to Austria and then Italy from Austria. Despite the fact that I purchased a digital vignette, apparently a section of the road we were travelling on wasn't covered by it. I got two fines, one for 120 Euro and the other for 200 Euro. We will never again travel to Austria and will instead choose to ski elsewhere. Their overall loss will be far greater than the 320 Euro they stole from me.
Scandalous, Theft. Next time avoid Austria
Ordered On-line a vignet, but realized later €0 was charged. Asked ASFINAG how to solve this, but no answer. Suddenly they send a fine of €200. The error is with ASFINAG but I have to pay. Real bad mentality.
Next time avoid Austria.
200 fine for an obvious typing error
I made an obvious typing error in which two letters were accidentally reversed. A penalty of €200 for a minor input error appears disproportionate, especially since the toll was in fact paid.
I would not give them even 1 star .
I would not give them even 1 star .
It is a purposely setup tourist trap .
First at all you could hardly buy it online -website hardly ever works ,then finally bought it in Austria ,put it up ,however the Asfinag still fined me cause the sticker was 4 inch out from where it supposed to .Bunch of disgusting thieves!F u all :-)
No issues with a digital vignette
After reading reviews about ASFINAG, I was concerned if I’ll get a fine even when I have a digital vignette. However, there was no issue entering and exiting the country. Haven’t received any fines since then.
The digital vignette is very convenient. Just be careful and drive really slowly when entering/exiting so that the number plate can be registered automatically.
ASFINAG unique Scam system method
I bought and applied the vignette properly, and about three weeks later I received 2 * a €120 fine.
What’s worse is that if you don’t pay right away, the amount can escalate significantly (from a few hundred up to several thousand euros).
It feels unfair that a driver who actually paid and has proof is treated the same as someone who didn’t pay at all and simply crossed the country without a vignette.
Almost everywhere in Europe there are tolls or vignettes (Germany is the exception for cars), but in Austria it seems fines are issued automatically, without taking into account proof of payment or the specific situation.
That’s why many people see the system as abusive—or even a scam.
My experience in Austria was the worst…
My experience in Austria was the worst of all the countries I have ever visited in my life. For driving 5 km without paying the road tax, they fined me €120 forfeit.
I don't recommend anyone to go on holiday to Austria.
They are thieves and scammers who take advantage of foreigners who visit their country.
Money collectors
Ignorrant people working there, not given any chance for understanding and being kind to their customer.
I understand their law, however a tourist is still tourist, even though I do not want to cheat on road and I want to pay if I did mistake. Why I need to pay 10 times more for my mistake, even I bought ticket afterward? They do not pay back, but they want me to pay the fine as well.
No sign of kindness, or any other understanding.
Now I have a bad prejudice about the whole nation there!
Scam business model - take the detour
Scam business.
Nevet got the first letter of a 120EURO fine from missing a road toll. I thought everything was covered by the vignette. My bad.
Calling, writing them - trying to pay the fine. To bad. The case has been turn over to authories. Tried to explain I never got the first letter and just want to pay the fine and get on with my life.
Sorry, cant do. Now the case goes to authorities - and can expect a 300+ EURO fine.
What a shit show of rigid bureaucracy. Taking the long road around next time.
Disappointed with ASFINAG Austria – Unfair Fine Despite Valid Vignette
I’m extremely disappointed with ASFINAG. I purchased a valid vignette for driving in Austria and had all the necessary documentation to prove it — the physical sticker, the receipt, everything. Despite this, I was fined.
When I contacted them and showed all the evidence, their response was shockingly dismissive: “It doesn’t matter, the camera flagged it as invalid.” no willingness to investigate, just to pay €120, fine.
It’s frustrating to deal with such rigid bureaucracy and people, especially when you’ve done everything. This experience has left a bitter taste and made me reconsider driving through Austria again.
Bought a Vignette and still fined
Bought a Vignette and I made an error on an 0 and an O on a Slovakian number plate as I'm unfamiliar with the plate format being a UK citizen. When you buy the Vignette there is no number plate validation in the checkout! I was fined despite proving I had purchased a Vignette. The claim has been declined. Very disappointing.
Austria go box rip off
Why is it that France and Germany accept my V5 logbook for emissions class but asfinag dont!
Got a go box at services they scanned my V5 and asked what the emissions class is. Asked for money 100 euros to load it up , now I get this letter in the UK wanting more evidence of class which I dont have.
Well I won't be going back to Austria in my motorhome so no more tourist money from me and I would imagine many others as well
Unfair and robotic treatment by ASFINAG
I had a very disappointing experience with ASFINAG. On my way from Vienna Airport, an official diversion in Fischamend forced me directly onto the motorway. At the entrance I immediately realized that a vignette was required – but there was no way to stop or turn around safely, as cars were behind me.
I did exactly what a responsible driver should do: I continued safely and purchased a vignette at the first available petrol station (OMV Raststation Göttlesbrunn). This was only three minutes after the alleged violation was recorded. Three minutes! That includes finding parking and queuing inside the station.
Despite this, ASFINAG still issued a fine and completely ignored the circumstances. When I appealed, their reply showed zero empathy and simply repeated “rules are rules”. They offered no explanation of what a driver should realistically do in such a situation. Am I expected to reverse on a motorway entrance and cause a traffic accident, just to avoid a fine?
This rigid and robotic approach punishes responsible behavior and leaves a very negative impression for visitors. I respect the laws, but fair treatment and common sense should also matter.
Tourists beware: even if you act immediately and in good faith, ASFINAG will not care.
Asfinag scam the drivers.
I bought and sticked the vignette and after 2 months it comes a 120 euro fine. If you fail to pay additional 300 to 3000 euros fine will incur. I am sceptical how this company issue these. Is it equalise someone that doesn't pay and cross the country with someone that pay and have the facts and receipts. I see alot of people here call this company a scam. Every country except Germany for car drivers has tolls or vignette and Austrian network with no justification send fines..
Do not buy vignette from ASFINAG!!!!
Do not buy vignette from this company!!!!!! It is a big fraud!!!!!! Very sad ASFINAG is on government website everybody would trust. Before you will buy, read reviews!!!!
Fine for nothing (unlegal behavior)
They fined me for nothing. I had a highway sticker, it was stuck on the windshield according to the instructions, I sent them proof of this, but they still fined me after several correspondences. I see that this is a common case, many of us are being cheated by this company with its treatment of consumers that is not worthy of Europe. I am looking for international legal remedies, because it is intolerable that a state-owned company should operate like this in our Europe. This must end! Guilt must be proven, not innocence. I have been proving for 3 months with all kinds of detailed materials that I acted legally. I am planning to demand compensation from them! The problem is that we all let the issue go because of the money amount and thus let them keep the system work.
Its a rip-off, makes me sad
I purchased and paid for a 20-day vignette. And yet I received a fine for driving in Austria within the days purchased. I cannot find any email address or phone number to call to clear up matters. Its a rip-off. Really makes me sad.
I’m shocked and frustrated by the way…
I’m shocked and frustrated by the way tolls are handled in Austria. I drove through a regular tunnel — no signs, no warning, no toll booths, nothing to indicate this was a separate paid section. Just a normal road.
Immediately after, I received a €120 fine for not paying for an “extra toll” tunnel.I drive 5k km paid every sigle time so wasn't intentional How are drivers supposed to know about this in advance? There were no clear signs, no notifications, nothing in English or any other language.
This feels like a setup — not a fair toll system, but a money trap. If Austria wants to charge for certain tunnels beyond the vignette, it should be clearly marked. Instead, drivers are punished without warning.
I will never drive through Austria again and strongly warn others about these hidden tolls
Misleading and bad customer service
Very disappointing experience with the Austrian toll system (ASFINAG / asfinag.at).
We crossed Austria in a van for barely two hours, without any clear or visible indication that we were entering a toll road without a vignette. There were no obvious signs or barriers to make this clear. A month later, we received a €120 fine, with no option to dispute it, even after providing honest explanations.
I understand the need for a toll system, but the lack of clear information, the absence of any immediate warning, and the disproportionate severity of the fine feel like abusive practices targeting foreign visitors.
A true money-making machine disguised as public service.
