It advertises its self as "Free" accounting software that's open source. It even advertises its self as "Double Entry". Talk about deceptive advertising. There is double entry! They are correct. It does offer double entry. HOWEVER, if you want double entry, it's an "App". An EXTRA feature that costs $72.00 per year or a lifetime license of $756.00 at the time of this review. The free is useless. Every little feature is an app that you have to pay for that is a recurring fee that is ridiculously expensive. Quickbooks is considerably cheaper. And, Quickbooks is one of the higher priced accounting software. I have decided for now to use FrappeBooks. Nice UI. Double Entry. Ability to attach receipts. Has an HR module, and a employee education module. It even has a complete ERP. I don't need all of that. My primary need was accounting. But, an HR module with FREE payroll would be nice which FrappeBook offers. For personal accounting, I'm pretty sure I'm going to use FireFly III. I'm still evaluating one of the oldest open-source software out there, GNUCash. I'm actually impressed with GNUCash. It has had a lot of updates. The UI is still a bit archaic. But, it has all the feature for both Small Business and Personal that most individuals need. What I do know is there is NO WAY I would ever use Akaunting and support that business with the deceptive advertising, and how they advertise as open-source, instead, they are one of the most greedy, expensive accounting software on the market for a small business. If the double entry feature was $6.00 A YEAR, or $72.00 lifetime, ABSOLUTELY. Tons of small business would use it. And, it keeps the Open-source software being updated, paying the developers that contribute. That's true open-source. This is just pure greed! And basic apps like backup is $72.00 a year, check printing ... just to print a check is $36.00 a year, to print 1099 forms it's $72.00 a year, WooCommerce, a basic API connection to import your sales is $84.00 a year. To create a budget costs $60.00 a year!!! If you look at the features of what QuickBooks $36.00 per month subscriptions offers which is $432.00 a year would cost over a thousand if NOT THOUSANDS each year for Akaunting. And compared to what FrappeBooks or GNUCash offers, you will save THOUSANDS! Just look at the Apple iOS App store review of Akaunting. It has a 1.6 star review at the time of this review, wow lol. 1.6 stars!!! Some of the worst apps don't even have that low of a score! That says it all. The Akaunting Android app was removed from the Google App store. It's no longer available. From what I can tell from the way back machine, in 2022, close to three years ago, it had 1.8 reviews from 104 users. Let me sum this up! If you're a small business and or even mid-business, if you want to burn, throw away your hard-earn income (cash), go buy some fireworks, at least you get a show for your money compared to throwing your money away on Akaunting!

Akaunting's advertising is completely misleading. They claim to offer "Free Accounting Software for Small Businesses," but the reality is you only get free invoicing and hosting. The core accounting feature, double-entry, requires a paid plan. This is blatantly false advertising. They need to update their website to say "Free Invoicing Software" instead of pretending it’s a full accounting solution. Hugely disappointing and feels like a bait-and-switch. Avoid if you're looking for actual free accounting software.

Garbage. I cancelled my account and removed my debit card, and a year after the initial charge, they charged my card 5 TIMES. Poor customer support, no phone number. Abysmal company. STAY AWAY!!!

We purchased the Payroll module for the on-premise version of Akaunting, expecting it to function as advertised. However, after installation, we encountered a major bug and usability issues that made the module unfit for our needs. We reached out to support to report the problems, but instead of providing real solutions, they responded dismissively and insisted that the module includes all features shown in the demo and screenshots.

When we requested a refund however they denied it, citing the fact that we are using the on-premise version—even though this was not clearly explained before the purchase (hidden in the terms). It feels like a trap: once the product is downloaded, they wash their hands of responsibility.

This kind of behavior is highly unprofessional and borders on deceptive. Every minor feature is charged additionally, and when something doesn’t work, you're left with no recourse. Akaunting might look attractive on the surface, but be very cautious—especially if you are considering their paid modules.

We do not recommend this product or company unless their refund policies and support approach improve significantly.

This software is riddled with bugs and has no support, it doesn't matter if you've paid for apps or not. The straw that broke the camels back for me is the software is emailing clients that their invoices are overdue, but the invoices are paid for. CRAZY! I've changed settings, disabled email notifications, but the emails are still going out, every morning.

Every release, I've reported a bug, but every release there are more bugs and when the bugs are cosmetic I can work around that, but if the bugs are so prevalent that they affect the running of my business. That is just not good.

It's been 6 months of me trying to make this system work, but today is the day I pull the plug.

Akaunting and their team should be ashamed.

Rude, unhelpful customer service and confusing UI. Completely disappointed that I spent $96 for a year. I really wish I would have read these reviews first. Searching for something new.

I failed to cancel the annual renewal having downloaded all the data a year ago and not having used it for a year. 3 days after they charged me I asked them to refund and explain the situation. They refused a refund. Clearly a company that's happy to take your money for a year of non-use and then another year because it's their right to take money they will do so regardless. Zero customer service. In addition I stopped using the software because it's not very good. I would avoid this company, not good software and then very poor customer service and attitude.

Keep in mind this is an old experience but gauging by all the feedback I fear my experience is still a common practice.

I used to use the app back when it was Open-Source. Now it's illegally re-licensed under to BSL which was done without the prior consent of contributors who contributed their work under Open-Source Copyleft License, knowing that the work would be free and open for all to use. Now the maintainers of the project illegally re-licensed their free work into a paid per-seat license which not only breaks law but also rightfully angers the community.

Best of all, I pointed it out in their GitHub issues, they swiftly deleted my issue to conceal this and blocked me from making any more issues on their repository. Asked Question on their Forum, again deleted the question and blocked my account. Sent them and email, got no response.

The project as mentioned by others here, looks nice only until you realise that it's just a re-skin of the old app they used to have, trust me, I used the old app, the new one has more issues than the old one, none are fixed. nothing changed, same bugs, same issues. Reconciliation broken. Customers, no, users, therefore when you include a customer, you now need to pay for their license seat. plugins, I say basic feature, and for extortionate prices.

There is no recovery from this, not from my point of view at least. They need to come back and say we, we made a giant mistake, we've understood this and will make appropriate changes, i.e. revert back to GPL which by the way still stands, despite them "changing" it to BLS. There was no consent from other contributors therefore they had no right to change it, so from where I stand its still GPL in my view. Not to say that I use what they call the "BLS" version, I kept my version of the app while it was under GPL license, and do not intend to upgrade until 5 years is over and the data stored there is not needed by HMRC, and I can finally just remove the app from my server.

Akaunting is a TOTAL SCAM! I signed up for a module, only to find out later that they AUTOMATICALLY RENEWED my subscription WITHOUT ANY CLEAR NOTIFICATION. When I realized this and requested a refund, they FLAT-OUT REFUSED. The customer service is TERRIBLE—UNRESPONSIVE and COMPLETELY UNHELPFUL. They seem more interested in TAKING YOUR MONEY than providing any real support. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND AVOIDING THIS APP. Look elsewhere if you want to SAVE YOURSELF FROM BEING SCAMMED.

after using this software happily for a couple of years they changed their License to BSL meaning to keep using i would have to pay $684 per year even though my usage is within the limits of the free license that allows "unlimited customers" what they don't say is that customers are also counted as users so in reality you are limited to 1 user and 1 customer. when i raised this on the forum the admin deleted my posts. They have taken GPL software and made it closed source which i'm sure is illegal since they don't own any of the user contributed code. after being pleased with this software for nearly 3 years its turned out to be nothing more than a bait and switch scam

Having used the free cloud hosted offering to support my daughter's small business for some time I was completely stunned to find that I am locked out of the system now unless I pay. Basically they're holding my data to ransom. There was no warning that this would happen and they are still promoting the software as free. I have opened several questions on their forums asking why they have acted as they have and each time they have deleted the question, unbelievable ! The package was adequate for a business in its early days and I'd hoped it would mature to support the business as it grows and could afford to pay for a better service but this hasn't happened. I would advise anybody thinking of using Akaunting to avoid it.

Seems a scam.
They advertise as a free service, and several months of using their accounting program, they send a mail stating that your trial suscription will be over by a specific date, which happens to be the following day, so that we do not have much time taking all the info off their program.
Also, the program makes many mistakes in simple calculations.

I've been a loyal user of Akaunting for quite some time, but recently they've changed their what was open-source license GPL to BSL which makes it source available, meaning that it's no longer open source. Also, and the reason for the one-star review, when I have raised it as an issue on their github repo to let them know that transfer to BSL might be illegal (as some of the source code has been contributed by community which I do not believe they have asked permission to change license for) they've banned me. After posting the issue, I was swiftly banned from making comments on their repo and my issue was deleted. I'm sure this is highly illegal and I would advise anyone to not invest time in the software! Just to be clear I did reach out to them via contact form on their website to ask why this was done but they have not responded. Also, to reinforce what's already been said by other reviewers, the software is very buggy, it has it flaws but I hoped those would get fixed with time, which being said it never had been and so now I am no longer considering but am actively moving away from Akaunting. I should write how they can improve but I don't think there is any recovering from this.

The software is full of bugs. I used to recommend it only to people with very basic needs due to the fact it was free (it wasn't worth it if add ons were required), but now they've decided to charge $12 USD per month for it. And to top it all off today is the 4th of October 2023 and they are charging people as of the 10th of October to keep using it. That is less than one weeks notice! This creates the impression they are desperate for money as they've given very little notice and tried to give what appear to be very generous discounts for annual subscriptions ($8 USD per month instead of $12 USD).
Please consider using Quickbooks or Recon instead. Both have better functionality & far less bugs for a similar price.

Absolute garbage software. There is no free trial and then they pressure you to upgrade. I upgraded to the yearly platform and it can't do basic functions like mass editing of imported transactions. I asked for a refund and they told me I should have known that from checking the free tier. Really junk software.

The don't provide the self advertised "Top-notch support" on there Apps (Developer: Akaunting Inc.) so even after having purchases module back in end of April / start of May they don't answer tickets in the support included to the module not even providing a working link to the needed download.

It should have stated "Support included: very unlikely and if your are very lucky bare minimum and bottom"

Be careful putting your money or worse trust of your data in there cloud they will just take your money and not do much work for it.

The UI is very nice and tidy and leaves nothing to be desired. Furthermore, I like the ease of use, which is the basic idea behind the software.

I firstly used the Cloud version and then switched to the On-Premise version. My experience with Akaunting so far has been very satisfactory.

The initial reason for switching to Akaunting was because Wave stopped offering services to South Africa and QuickBooks was getting to expensive.

Later I realized that this accounting software is very easy to use. You can start for free and upgrade from there which makes it the perfect solution for small businesses. The software gives you a view of everything you do through a simple dashboard.

Half baked software. Must thoroughly test before you start using it. Even though invoicing works, there are so many bugs that you realise it is not worth using. Also don't hold your breath for updates & bug fixes, last major update was just change of theme & repackaged old stuff. almost no support on the forum (the forum is full of questions without answers from developers).
