Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 376 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. People frequently complained about extremely long wait times for call-backs, with many left waiting many hours or even days without any proper response on the phone lines. Consumers often felt that the staff was dismissive, unhelpful, and frustratingly difficult to communicate with when seeking medical help during urgent situations. However, some customers also noted that when they finally connected with someone, the medical care received was surprisingly prompt, kind, and effective. A few people also praised specific doctors and practitioners for being thorough, professional, and genuinely reassuring during their stressful consultations. These positive moments brought genuine relief to patients who managed to get through.

Incompetence at it's best…

It's scary the level of incompetence in Wales. They need to be taught by English standards. Say one thing pass you onto another call and say something else 4 hrs later get thru to the consultant and despite being told they fitting ged out to get you in as a emergency they then say just go to a and e 4 calls back all day different ask same questions for 15 mins clueless shoving incompetence.seemed like just not interested

Helpful service

I filled in the 111 online form and it advised u needed to speak to a clinician and I would get a call back with 1hr may take longer as busy. I had a from a nurse to say as they haven't met the time frame just a curtesy call to reassure me I was still on the call back list. Within 10 mins of that call I had a call back from the clinician who was very nice, helpful and sympathetic, sent a video link to I could show where the pain was and she prescribed me antibiotics to pick up in the morning as no 24hr pharmacy where I live. Advised if symptoms get worse to call 111 up.
Thank you 111 for your help.

Waste of time for all

Waste of time for all
What to expect a phone call asking you to tick boxes that align with them and not real life. They say they do an assessment to put you through to clinician the clinician does another assessment ignoring all the notes from the first person. After that assessment you will find that it's not a assessment that has an outcome

Absolute waste of taxpayers money

First and last time using 111. 1st call, 10pm me to them, details given, result, a clinician will call within 5 hours.
2nd call, 3am, Clinician to me, took exactly same details but couldn't do anything because it wasn't his field. Told me an out of hours Doctor would call me back in around 2 hours. 7 hours later, no one at all had called me back. My issue was time sensitive because of prescribed drug dosage issues, and my cut off was 10 am, I rang 111 back.
3rd call, me to 111 (Heather) 10am, took almost all the same details AGAIN, then accidently hung up.
4th call, Heather 111 to me, couldn't explain why no one had rung ME, couldn't even tell me when, or if, someone would. She was rude, unhelpful and unprofessional. I asked her how I could complain about the 111 service and told her I would record the rest of the call (111 record them as well BTW). She said in that case she was terminating the call, I am still not sure why.
30 mins ago Heather's supervisor called me. Heather is in trouble. Forget 111, go to A&E unless you can wait a long time for treatment

My 87 year old mother was vomiting

My 87 year old mother was vomiting, bleeding badly from her rear and had bad stomach cramps. Unfortunately I did not live close to her snd she did not want to be an inconvenience over the weekend. I called 111 but they refused to speak to me, or take a medical assessment from me. They asked me to drive over to my mothers in order she could be in the same room as me whilst speaking to them.
This was not an option due to distance involved.
I asked if they could call her, they refused.
Terrible service and no duty of care for the patient.....

Extremely impressed with NHS 111 who came to my rescue early hours of the morning. The lady I spoke to was caring and gave me advice on medication to take immediately and arranged for an ambulance to arrive. Within 15 mins I was being taken to hospital by an equally nice couple of paramedics. The treatment I then received at the Same Day Emergency Care Unit was exceptional. I am very grateful to all those who work for our wonderful NHS.

After a six hour wait in hospital and…

After a six hour wait in hospital and no diagnosis etc, no bed. We went home to allow my child to rest and were told we would be seen first thing in the morning. We called 111 disclosing the possible breaks, pain my child was in hoping for an appointment. No appointment given even though we had xrays. When we went to hospital, it made no difference whatsoever. It took a total of twenty hours for my child to be diagnosed as the hospital made us wait all over again even after referral and x-ray. My child has a likely fracture, sprain, bruising etc after falling off a zip wire. Pushed to our limits after three hours sleep. Horrible. Not listened to about the fact I needed to drop my other child at school. The call made us late, taking fifteen minutes, with staff at the hospital pretty much saying it made no difference.

Really impressed with the service from NHS 111.
I called due to concerns about a post-surgery infection and they were excellent from start to finish. Both call handlers were calm, thorough, and asked the right questions, and I was quickly directed to the appropriate care.

They arranged a follow-up appointment the next morning, which made a stressful situation much easier to manage.

It’s easy to overlook services like this, but they play a vital role — and based on my experience, they do it very well.

Thank you to the team.

I called 111 on behalf of my 91 year…

I called 111 on behalf of my 91 year old father, he often gets urine infection, he was showing the usual symptoms, and on a Sunday afternoon I didn’t know how to get help for him. He couldn’t walk and lives in a 1st floor flat so I couldn’t take him to urgent treatment centre, he wasn’t dying so didn’t want to call 999. The triage caller took ages (15 mins) and kept asking the same question but slightly differently. At the end she said it’s either they can call an ambulance or they will get a medically trained staff member to call back. They called back 5 hours later (9.50pm) and asked me to wake him, just so they could ask the same questions I had already been quizzed on 5 hours before, I said no to waking him, and they just said they cannot progress unless I get him to answer them. In the end I just lost my temper and told them to get lost. They sent out an ambulance on blue lights 15 minutes later. When I answered the door to the ambulance they agreed that the 111 waste their time all the time. Long story short, nothing was done, I don’t know who to call, what is the pathway to get him a urine test, treatment, help, advice. Even his district nurse said she can’t do a urine test without his gp say so. So to me he has to get Ill, fall over and call an ambulance and get carted into A&E for 18 hours wait.

Pointless and terrible service

Dental abscess. Rang the emergency dentist line who told me to ring 111. Completed the 111 online form 855pm. My 20 min call back never happened. Rang them went through questions. They said I was on a clinician’s list for a call back. Got a call back at midnight not from a clinician - went through the same questions to be told I would need to ring the dental help line (closed) and couldn’t give me antibiotics

Got the clinician call back at 3am. Who again repeated the same questions - repeated several times he couldn’t do anything. And then proceeded to lecture me on the dangers of painkillers! And wouldn’t give antibiotics telling me to ring the dental helpline. Guess what that told me - to ring 111

If you ever hear how "busy and under…

If you ever hear how "busy and under pressure" health services are that's because there are uninformed people working there. I spoke with 3 different people about the same thing. I was sent to pharmacy for medication which wasn't ready and it wasn't even available in this pharmacy. I was later told my medication has to be prescribed but the person who called me couldn't prescribe it... all I needed was a small supply of my regular medication and I couldn't get it. If your medication was prescribed by specialist 111 can't help you. You're on your own.

Don’t Touch 111 - the Staff are Barely Literate!

A complete and utter waste of time and taxpayer money!! If I had just ONE thing positive to say about this shambles, I’d say it in the appropriate area, but the staff I encountered were talking to me as if I was - and this is in no way meant to be derogatory - 100% senile!! Clearly, there’s training problems (not the fault of the call handlers) here which need to be urgently addressed. The repetition of questions for details already given was bad enough, but the standard of English left much to be desired - how does someone in their job confuse the names Joan and Joanne, unless they have serious literacy problems? Whoever is responsible for the recruitment and training of these bods needs to wake their ideas up and realise that unless the potential recruit can speak, read and understand English 100%, they shouldn’t be in the job!

Worst service….

I rang on Friday for an emergency prescription as my surgery wouldn’t provide me it over the weekend. I was told I’d receive a call back on the same day within 12 hours from a clinician, I am still waiting for that phone call and went all weekend without medication. Poor service and good job it was life threatening medication.
