Room for improvement.
The handover at pick up was very poor. The person conducting the handover seemed to have very little knowledge of the vehicle functions especially when I said we would be off grid without power for most of the trip. I asked specifically about the battery and solar set up only to be told “I don’t know about those things”. In addition the gas hot water was not working which was required due to being off grid. I am waiting for the Virginia office to get back to me with a report and how I can be compensated for 11 days of no hot water.
Aside from the above the motor home was very good and certainly met our needs.

Most uncomfortable
We paid a premium rate for the van. It did not feel new. The bed was very very very uncomfortable. We did not sleep well at all

Avoid Maui Rentals
I rented one way, Brisbane to Cairns. I was given a barely safe van, it pulled to the right, had a terrible vibration between 70-80 kph, had no windshield wiper solution and blades as hard as rocks. The tires were barely legal on the front. It was also filthy at pickup.
Excellent holiday with Maui
The van itself was beautiful and very easy and intutive to drive and set up. The crew were helpful and friendly. From start to finish, it was a pleasure and I will definitly be doing it again.

Pick-up in Brisbane – room for improvement
The camper itself was excellent, but unfortunately the pick-up experience in Brisbane was quite disappointing.
We spent around three hours at the pick-up location, much of it waiting. If Saturdays are known to be particularly busy, it would make sense to schedule additional staff during peak times. This could significantly reduce waiting times and create a much better first impression.
The vehicle introduction was friendly, but unfortunately very rushed. The staff member was clearly exhausted, which made it difficult to ask questions or get a proper introduction to the vehicle. The videos provided are helpful, but they cannot replace having enough time for individual questions.
The biggest issue for us, however, was the additional insurance sales process. We had already made our decision before arriving, but were then subjected to a lengthy and very persistent sales conversation. It felt less like providing information and more like using pressure and fear to convince us to purchase additional insurance. After looking forward to starting our holiday, this was a very unpleasant experience.
The process of handling the security deposit was also surprising: the amount was charged to the credit card rather than simply being blocked, while the refund can apparently take up to two weeks.
Overall, the staff were friendly and professional, but the pick-up process in Brisbane felt unnecessarily long, sales-focused and stressful. A faster handover, more time for the vehicle introduction, and a much less aggressive approach to additional insurance would make a significant difference to the customer experience.
Great customer service

Very good experience with Maui rentals
Very great location for our Maui campervan from Brisbane to Cairns.
Instructions given at Brisbane Rentals location were very useful and appreciated. Drop off was really smooth and fast at Cairns Rentals location.

Super helpful staff.
They made the start of our dream holiday a breeze. The motorhome was ready to go as soon we got to the branch, and the staff knew what they were talking about when explaining how to use everything in the van.

There was no pack to get your started on your trip, ie with a dish cloth, detergent this would have been helpful. We have rented previously and this was something which was provided.

Great booking interface, well priced products, very easy pick up and drop off.

The good, the bad and the ugly
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
The Good
The motorhome was built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter cab-chassis, which performed as expected throughout our trip. Over approximately 4,500 km it proved reliable and comfortable to drive, with fuel consumption averaging around 16 L/100 km. We experienced no mechanical issues with the vehicle itself.
Telephone support
We contacted Maui support several times during our trip. The response was generally excellent and the staff were knowledgeable, helpful and willing to investigate issues when they didn't immediately have the answer. There was one occasion when we waited around 20 minutes for assistance, but overall the support experience was very positive.
Layout and living space
My wife and I are experienced motorhome renters, both in Australia and overseas, and have also owned a caravan for many years. The layout of our six-berth motorhome met our expectations and provided sufficient comfort and living space for two adults undertaking an extended trip.

The Bad
Cleanliness and maintenance at pickup
The vehicle was presented below our expectations. Some cooking utensils required cleaning before use, a number of linen items were stained, and the living-area floor appeared not to have been cleaned thoroughly. Interestingly, the driving cabin was spotless, suggesting the cleaning effort may not have been consistent throughout the vehicle.
Several fixtures also appeared overdue for maintenance. The main entry door would not open from the outside unless pressure was applied in exactly the right place, despite a prominent notice advising users not to force the handle. Many external storage hatches were similarly difficult to open.
Cost-cutting in the fit-out
Compared with motorhomes rented from competitors, our impression was that the vehicle had been fitted out to a budget. The entertainment system was particularly basic and proved unreliable at times, despite us supplying our own Fire Stick and Starlink equipment.
The fridge was also small for a vehicle intended for long-distance touring and remote travel.
Minor failures and usability issues
A number of small but frustrating defects emerged during the trip. The door retainer used to hold the entry door open failed due to what appeared to be a manufacturing defect.
The fridge locking mechanism failed on several occasions while travelling on rough roads, resulting in items being thrown around inside and causing breakages.
Changing gas cylinders was also unnecessarily difficult due to the confined storage compartment. Removing the cylinders for refill resulted in scraped hands and considerable frustration.

The Ugly
Handover and briefing process
The handover process could have been considerably better.
There was pre-existing damage to the vehicle which we identified at collection. Although this was reported immediately, it was not added to the check-out documentation.
The briefing also failed to explain several quirks of the motorhome, including the operation of the sticky entry door and fuel cap, both of which required much more force than seemed reasonable given the number of "Do Not Force" warnings displayed nearby.
There appeared to be inaccurate information provided regarding both the operation of the fridge and the AdBlue system. Most modern diesel vehicles will not start if the AdBlue runs out.
By the end of the trip (which had been considerably shortened from our original plan), the AdBlue warning system had entered the reserve range. During the handover briefing we had been advised that this would not occur.
Value for money
We rented this vehicle for one month.
Prior to booking, we also obtained a quote from a competitor whose vehicles we had used previously. Their equivalent rental, with similar insurance cover, was approximately $1,000 cheaper while offering a noticeably higher specification vehicle.
Given our experience, Maui did not represent the best value for money available at the time.

Recommendations
For potential hirers: Shop around and compare specifications carefully before booking.
For Maui: Remember the words of Olympic champion Maurice Greene:
"To be number one, you have to train like you're number two."
Maui has many strengths, particularly its support team, but maintaining a market-leading position requires continual attention to vehicle presentation, maintenance and value for money.
_______________________________
Overall Rating: 3/5 stars.
Reliable vehicle, excellent support and a practical layout, but let down by cleanliness, maintenance shortcomings and poor value compared with competitors.
Whole process was seamless & easy
The team at Maui Nudgee were outstanding. The whole process from start to finish was professional, thorough and easy. While actually finalising the online booking was a bit difficult (not all my questions were answered when I would email), the team at Nudgee were so great to deal with. The admin process at the start was organised and straightforward, and then the step-through of the van was thorough and professional. Les was great!
Even upon return, when my parents accidentally left a bag in one of the cupboards, the team had it waiting for them the next day as soon as it opened. I would 100% recommend hiring from Maui at Nudgee. Excellent service and great value.

Our first time to rent a motorhome so we where a bit apprehensive at first but didnt take too long to get used to driving and the living onboard conditions .
Will do it again.
Only issue that we had was we thought that the guy who showed us around the motor on pickup was far too quick in explaining how it operated and how all the gadgets worked such as toilet cassete , stove and house battery , even though we watched each video at least 4 times some things where still not clear how they operated .
But everything worked out ok .
