Horrible policy about one account per household

They have a policy where you can only have one account per household, which is pretty wild considering many people share mailing addresses with siblings/parents/etc who may not wish to also share an account. They cancel other orders to the same address.

Thank you so much for your feedback regarding our policy. At ThredUp, we allow only one account per household, and orders placed to the same address may prevent the use of promo codes and could result in order cancellations. We understand this may not be ideal, and we truly value your input. We'll be sure to share your message with the appropriate team for further consideration.

They steal your items

They steal your items. I wish I had read all the reviews before sending in my kit. I sent in a premium kit filled with designer items new with tags, sea Zimmerman Annie bing. They priced the new items which had tags attached as “flawed gems” and were over 500 each for 35 dollars. The items sold right away to their friends or co workers. They lost my trust, and this seems to be a giant scam. Other items I sent in the kit were never even listed on my sales page. Did they just get up and walk off? I would never send them anything again and I urge others not to because they are unethical.

Slow delivery - high shipping fees

Delivery is so slow. You have to spend what they have set as your "free shipping" threshold or you are paying 10.99 for shipping that could take up to two weeks.

Selling with them is frustrating as well. They often get the description of the items wrong, and if you ask for a review your item simply disappears.

Hi there,

We apologize for any confusion regarding our shipping options. For standard shipping, your items will be shipped in one box. If your items are coming from different warehouses, we will combine them, which may take up to 5 business days before shipping. Alternatively, we offer separate shipping for $15.99, where items from different warehouses will not be combined and will be shipped in two or more boxes. Once shipped, delivery typically takes 3–8 business days. If you receive any items that are not as described, please feel free to reach out to our support team—we will be happy to assist you further.

They steal from people

They steal from people! I sent 17 items in that I thoroughly checked and 6 were new even with tags! They marked 10 ineligible including 4 new items and said they would just donate them! Totally scam. I could’ve donated them myself if I wasn’t trying to sell them. WTF!! Avoid at all costs!

Hi Beth,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your experience was not positive. At ThredUp, we understand that it takes a lot of trust for sellers to send in their clothing, and we have many measures in place to ensure all items are processed according to our standards. Please note that we cannot guarantee the acceptance of any items, regardless of their condition or brand. That’s why we offer the option to have unaccepted items returned to you if they are not listed under the Premium Consignment option.

Customer loyalty and trust are top priorities for us at ThredUp, and we work hard to uphold these values in our business. If you have any further questions about our process, please feel free to reach out to our Support Team.

AVOID !!!!

Avoid this place!!!!

I sent a bag full of brand-new items with tags. Out of everything, they only approved 4 items to sell and they paid the absolute minimum for each one.

What’s even worse is that the items they claimed “didn’t qualify” were still put up for sale, but I wasn’t paid anything for them. They basically keep your merchandise without compensating you.

Terrible experience. I do not recommend this place at all.

Thank you so much for your feedback, and we’re very sorry to hear about your experience. We truly want our sellers to have a great experience, and we strive to provide all relevant information ahead of time, including our Payout Estimator and Selling Guide. To help clarify, some low-priced items are ineligible for a payout because their processing costs are higher than their resale value. Even though we’re not able to offer a payout for items from these brands, you’re still welcome to send them in—we’ll do our best to give them a second life and ensure they don’t end up in a landfill.

Go to a local consignment store...

Go to a local consignment store - not ThredUp. I have purchased from ThredUp in prior years. The process was easy for both purchasing and returning. It is still easy to purchase but they no longer include a return bag and they do charge $10.99 for a return label in addition to the $3.99 per item to restock.

All of the pants were much too long so I returned them but this is the last time I will use ThredUp.

Hi Lynda,

We’re sorry to hear about your experience with returning. If there was any error on our part, we will always waive the $10.99 shipping fee. While we understand the $3.99 restocking fee isn’t ideal, our goal is to offer customers access to the widest variety of secondhand pieces at the most affordable prices. To keep our prices low, we do need to apply certain fees to our services. These fees may change over time, but we always have the best interests of our customers in mind.

High flat fees and selective processing undermine the sustainability message

I’ve used ThredUp before and followed the same process this time. I did not knowingly select a premium option, yet I was charged a large flat processing fee that significantly reduced my payout.

The brands I sent — Madewell, Rails, Anthropologie, Pilcro cashmere — are mid-tier labels that typically resell well on platforms like Poshmark or eBay, where sellers pay a percentage commission rather than a large flat bag fee. Even accounting for effort and platform fees, the net return would likely have been substantially higher.

What is especially frustrating is the disconnect between the company’s sustainability messaging and the actual experience. Sellers are encouraged to send in usable clothing to “keep items out of landfills,” yet many items are not listed, and only the pieces that are most profitable for the platform appear to be accepted and sold. Meanwhile, a flat processing fee is deducted regardless of how much is actually earned.

If sustainability is the goal, the structure should not result in sellers losing most of their potential earnings while the platform retains the majority of the value.

The website itself is also difficult to navigate. Item-level transparency requires downloading a spreadsheet, and “view all” links loop back to summary pages. The overall experience feels opaque rather than straightforward.

Convenient, yes. Transparent and aligned with its stated mission? Not really

I’ve tried buying on there and stuff never fits right. Quality is so so. But what truly regret is selling stuff on there. You get barely any money back if something sells and they charge you a fee if you want your item back Poshmark is so much better. I do not recommend up at all.

BEST SCAM ARTISTS IN CONSIGNMENT!!!

Just spent about thirty minutes of my time asking a Thread Up associate for an explanation of why I was being emailed to "buy back" (at $0.00) plus being charged a fee of $5.99 for one little top I had consigned. This top was the least expensive item of them all!
First of all; I sent in a heavy bag of clothes (jeans and four-five tops including a sweater) back in the month of January 2026. Most of my bag items were, like-new good quality clothes (minus the sweater - it was a donation), including a brand-new, unworn pair of Levi's jeans! The jeans were immediately deemed unsellable - and they were perfect new denim jeans! It's the first day of March now, and within the 30-35 minutes of time spent chatting with that associate, I have learned that AALLLL the other items in my bag were "INeligible" for re-sale!! One of the tops I sent in was new and from a high fashion women's boutique! It will probably be sold, and they'll collect $30+ for it!! The SCAM IS that they claim in their hidden small print, they only accept "select brands" for resale, which cleverly allows them to state your items are not acceptable for consignment. Then ... I AM SURE of this, it's not a GUESS, when they turn around and sell it, they KEEP ALL OF THE PROFITS! DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY, and throw away the scam Thread Up bag that they send you in the mail! I had never heard of this company, before ... that strange bag was mailed to me (didn't request it!) ... lesson learned, they are a TOTAL SCAM!! DO NOT send them your clothes thinking you'll get any money back for the valued re-sale price.

This company is absolute garbage

This company is absolute garbage and I don’t know why they stay in business. If you’re purchasing, you can find some good items but most of them are trash. Don’t ever try to sell with them, it’s a scam, they pay you pennies. A dress I sent sold for $30 and I only “earned” $4. And they didn’t even pay me that because allegedly I owed the $7 dollars for the sale. They also steal the items that aren’t “eligible” according to them. They say they won’t accept them but keep them anyway.
If your item doesn’t sell in 45 days, you can “reclaim it” but they charge you for it. Just go to Goodwill, at least you’ll know it goes to a good cause

Steal & lie. Equal to throwing clothes in a landfill.

I truly have never experienced worse customer service in my life. Their customer service rep has done their absolute best to make sure I was lied to and not helped.

Do NOT sell on Thredup. I am distraught, they are a scam and literally steal from you. I wish I saw all the reviews explaining how they don’t sell and instead give items to their employees or sell to other stores and keep the profits from you. I submitted all good brands that they accept (made sure to copy their website instructions and current seasonal products wanted) and in near perfect hardly worn condition and now without any explanation they are refusing to even pay me $2 for them and just kept them and “recycle responsibly” aka the people who work there end up just getting to keep your brand name clothes when they don’t want to process them.

They are selling my Frye boots (unworn, $350 value) for $51 and said if they dont sell in 21 days I get $0. Ironically because it took them far more than 21 days to even list them or respond to me. I am making $1 on a dress. 3 other dresses they said didn’t sell in 7 days so I get $0 now. And all other top brands they said they won’t sell and won’t provide explanation or give them back to me (free people, vuori, Nicole miller, max studio, Sorell, lululemon, and so much more)

After finally agreeing in writing in an email to send all my clothing back to me for the mistake and misunderstanding, then they ignored me for a whole month and later came back and said they wouldn’t (clearly gave it all away in the meantime and had to cover their asses) and could only offer a $25 “credit” via a poorly copy paste answer from someone else that didn’t even make sense. This is the shadiest business I have ever seen.

See screenshots of their emails & false promises by checking recent uploads to their Google reviews.

Lack of Clarity business... loose loose for sellers

This Place literally steals your clothes! They say you can sell on their site, however, they take good clothes and sell provide just a fraction of what you send. Most pieces of clothes sent "do not qualify" for sale (mind you I sent pieces categorized as such with tickets from the stores, BRAND NEW... and they did not send these items back, they "recycle" them. Then, to add insult to injury, they take a piece of what ever earnings and hit you with a service charge. Bottom line... this is a scam!

I’m very disappointed with my selling experience

I’m very disappointed with my experience selling clothes on Thred Up. I have ordered a lot of clothes from them over the past couple of years and have been somewhat satisfied with the results. As a seller it’s been terrible. Because of all the fees they charge I will not make any money. I basically gave them all of these name brand clothes for free. If I wanted to reclaim them I was going to have to pay a $6 fee per piece plus shipping so essentially buy my own clothes back. There were also several pieces that weren’t even listed that were new or hardly used. Even some that I ordered from them previously. I was not given an option to get them back. I would have rather sold them on Poshmark or given them to my local women’s shelter than not know how they are going to be “recycled.” It feels like a scam for me and I’ve decided to no longer support their business as a buyer either.

falsifying condition of items

I'm so frustrated with ThredUp and them falsifying the condition of items. My last two orders have had this exact issue. The sweater was listed as "excellent condition, practically new: shows no obvious signs of being worn or washed." Yet when I received it in the mail, there are multiple bad stains all over it and it was very dirty.

The kicker is they expect me to pay for return shipping from Canada. Yeah, so I'll lose half of what I paid sending it back. I don't understand how they can continue to operate with such shady business practises. At least with Poshmark, they have resolved any issues of discrepancy between the listing and the item.

They are absolutely not ethical…

They are absolutely not an ethical company. They steal the items they do not want nor giving you an opportunity to get them back. If they do offer you the chance to get them back you have to pay to get your own items back. Ripoff.

Update: They credited me $18 for a Coach laptop bag and $9 for Cordani sandals. They suggested a premium bag next time. I had no idea there were different bags. I just got one in the mail and used it.

Read all of their policies upfront. There is something to be said though about having a combined review of 1.4 stars.

Thread up seller’s scam

This is a SCAM. I sent to them probably $4k worth of clothes including $1k plus suit sets that I never wore and had tags on them. They won’t send me the unsold items back, including the unsold/unlisted suit sets that have never been worn and still Have tags on them! Avoid at all costs!!! I’ve made $11.00. That’s it. Good for de cluttering/buying but not for selling and making money

I sent very good clothes for them to sell for me, unfortunately they didn’t allow me to sell my clothes on a higher price and they take most of the money. For example they sold my jeans for 28.00 dollars and from that my earnings are 2.79. I recommend this site to get rid of your clothes but not to make money.
After posting this review thread up reached out to me, they offered to ship the items I sent them that weren’t sold yet for free and I bought a couple items from them as well.
